A joint Anglo-American plot is devised to steal a highly advanced Soviet fighter aircraft (MiG-31, NATO code name "Firefox") which is capable of Mach 6, is invisible to radar, and carries weapons controlled by thought. Former United States Air Force Major Mitchell Gant (Eastwood), a Vietnam veteran and former POW, infiltrates the Soviet Union, aided by his ability to speak Russian (due to his having had a Russian mother) and a network of Jewish dissidents and sympathizers, three of whom are key scientists working on the fighter itself. His goal is to steal the Firefox and fly it back to friendly territory for analysis.

In June 1972, a security guard (Frank Wills, playing himself) at the Watergate complex finds a door kept unlocked with tape. In 1984 East Germany, Stasi Captain (Hauptmann) HGW XX/7, Gerd Wiesler, suggests to his superiors that he begin to spy on the playwright Georg Dreyman. Wiesler and his team bug the apartment, set up surveillance equipment in an attic and begin reporting Dreyman's activities. Dreyman had escaped state scrutiny due to his pro-Communist views and international recognition. Wiesler soon learns the real reason behind the surveillance: Minister of Culture Bruno Hempf covets Dreyman's girlfriend, actress Christa-Maria Sieland, and is trying to eliminate Dreyman as a romantic rival. While Wiesler's superior, Lt. Col. Anton Grubitz, sees an opportunity for advancement, Wiesler, an idealist, is horrified, asking Grubitz "Is this why we joined?" Minister Hempf coerces Sieland into having sex with him by exploiting her vulnerability as an insecure actress whose livelihood is dependent on state approval of stagecraft. After discovering Sieland's relationship with Hempf (through Wiesler's covert intervention), Dreyman implores her not to meet him again. Sieland flees to a nearby bar where Wiesler, posing as a fan, urges her to be true to herself. She returns home and reconciles with Dreyman, rejecting Hempf.

À la fin de son règne, lors du Jubilé de 1887, on découvre la reine empêtrée par l'obséquiosité servile de son entourage. Affectivement, elle est seule depuis la mort de son mari trente ans plus tôt, ce que la scène introductive du banquet ne manque pas de souligner : les convives n'y paraissent que comme des pantins sans partager aucun affect ni propos avec la Reine. Lors de ce banquet, un seul invité se distingue : un des deux Indiens dépêchés par les autorités coloniales depuis la cité d'Agra pour présenter une pièce commémorative, et tenus par le protocole de ne jamais dévisager la Reine lorsqu'ils la lui montrent, ainsi que de se retirer le dos courbé à reculons tout le long du hall. Ce dernier ne respecte pas cette règle et tient un regard appuyé vers la Reine, laquelle ne manquera pas de le trouver beau ("handsome") en rapportant ultérieurement ses impressions auprès de son majordome. Elle réclame ensuite à nouveau sa présence, à la stupéfaction des valets.

Physical therapist Dian Fossey (Sigourney Weaver) is inspired by the anthropologist Louis Leakey (Iain Cuthbertson) to devote her life to the study of primates. To this end, she writes ceaselessly to him for a job cataloguing and studying the rare mountain gorillas of Africa. With some effort, she manages to convince Leakey of her conviction and devotion to the cause at hand after personally approaching him following a lecture in Louisville, Kentucky, on his part in 1966. Thereafter, Fossey embarks into the Congo, where Leakey and his foundation equip her with the necessary equipment and housing to achieve personal contact with the gorillas, and introduce her to a local animal tracker, Sembagare (John Omirah Miluwi), to assist her in her endeavors. Settling deep in the jungle, Fossey and Sembagare manage to locate a troop of gorillas, but they are ultimately displaced by the events of the Congo Crisis after being forcibly evicted from their research site by Congolese soldiers, who accuse Fossey of being a foreign spy and agitator.

A British ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor), who is never named, is recruited by Rhinehart Inc., a large publishing company, to complete the memoirs of former Prime Minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan). His predecessor on the project and Lang's long-term aide, Mike McAra, has recently died in an apparent accident. The writer travels to the fictional Massachusetts village of Old Haven on Martha's Vineyard, where Lang is staying with his wife, Ruth (Olivia Williams), in the house of Marty Rhinehart, the company owner, and a staff of servants and security personnel. The writer is checked into a small hotel. Lang's personal assistant (and implied mistress), Amelia Bly (Kim Cattrall), forbids him to take McAra's manuscript outside, emphasizing that it is a security risk. Rhinehart is allowing the new ghost four weeks to complete the book.
