Nancy Thompson (named Nancy Holbrook in the 2010 reboot) is a fictional character in the A Nightmare on Elm Street film series. She was portrayed by actress Heather Langenkamp in the original film series and by Rooney Mara in the 2010 remake. Nancy is the primary protagonist and final girl in the 1984 original film, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and Wes Craven's New Nightmare. The character also appears in the comic book series based on the films as well as the 2010 reboot.
The Nightmare franchise focuses on Freddy Krueger, a demon of a serial killer who uses dreams to murder the children of the people who burned him to death as an act of vengeance. Nancy is one of these children, and the films depict her struggle to survive her dreams and defeat Krueger.

Un jour, sa meilleure amie Tina lui confie avoir fait d'atroces cauchemars mettant en scène un homme au visage brûlé ayant des lames de rasoirs fixés sur sa main droite, et lui fait ainsi part de la crainte qui la paralyse depuis son réveil. Afin de la rassurer, Nancy et son petit ami Glenn Lantz restent dormir en sa compagnie. Pendant une discussion, elles réalisent qu'elles ont rêvé du même monstre. Quelques instants plus tard, ils sont rejoints par le petit ami de Tina, Rod Lane. Nancy et Glenn s'apprêtent alors à rentrer mais Tina insiste pour qu'ils restent. Durant la nuit, Rod lui avoue avoir eu des cauchemars, avant de s'endormir. Tina entend une voix l'appelant à l'extérieur de la maison, lorsqu'elle sort vérifier, elle est prise en chasse par son persécuteur, il la rattrape à l'entrée de la maison, se débattant en fait dans son lit, elle est traînée jusqu'au plafond malgré les efforts de Rod qui essaye en vain de la réveiller, et assassinée sous ses yeux.
Par peur d’être accusé du meurtre de celle-ci, il prend la fuite.
Nancy et Glenn, qui ont entendu les hurlements de Tina, enfoncent la porte de la chambre et découvrent avec horreur la dépouille de Tina baignant dans le sang.
