Alexandra Byrne is a costume designer. She trained on the Motley Theatre Design Course under Margaret Harris before embarking on her career as a costume designer in film.
She has designed the costumes for twelve films in her career, earning Academy Award nominations for four of them—Elizabeth [1], the 2007 sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age [2], Hamlet [3] and Finding Neverland [4]; and considerable acclaim for three others—Persuasion, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and The Phantom of the Opera. She won the Academy Award for Elizabeth: The Golden Age. [5]
She was also nominated for the Tony Award in 1990 for Best Scenic Design for Some Americans Abroad.[6]
She is married to actor Simon Shepherd with four children.

Biography
Alexandra Byrne suit des études d'architecture et, après l'obtention de son diplôme, choisit d'étudier la scénographie. Après avoir travaillé pour le théâtre pendant une quinzaine d'années, puis un peu pour la télévision, elle a l'occasion de créer des costumes pour deux petites productions au cinéma. Londres, 1862. À Regent's Park, une estrade est dressée, sur laquelle trône une immense montgolfière. Pas moins de 10000 personnes sont réunies pour assister à un exploit : battre le record d’altitude de 23000 pieds, détenu par des Français. Le vol en ballon est entrepris par le scientifique James Glaisher, qui souhaite étudier les phénomènes atmosphériques afin de prédire la météo, et la pilote extravagante Amelia Rennes, hantée par le sacrifice de son mari lors d'un voyage similaire. Pourtant, leur expédition scientifique se complique rapidement. Alors qu'ils vont plus haut dans l'atmosphère que n'importe quel ballon auparavant, ils traversent plusieurs intempéries dont une violente tempête. Après avoir battu le record, Amelia souhaite redescendre sur Terre mais Glaisher désire aller encore plus haut dans le ciel, ce qui les met en danger. Désormais, ils en viennent à se battre pour leur survie.

Queen Gorgo of Sparta tells her men about the Battle of Marathon, in which King Darius I of Persia was killed by General Themistocles of Athens 10 years earlier. Darius' son, Xerxes, witnesses his father's death, and is advised to not continue the war, since only "the gods can defeat the Greeks". Darius' naval commander, Artemisia, claims that Darius' last words were in fact a challenge and sends Xerxes on a journey through the desert. In 1988, following his mother's death, a young Peter Quill is abducted from Earth by the Ravagers, a group of space pirates led by Yondu Udonta. The Asgardian Loki encounters the Other, the leader of an extraterrestrial race known as the Chitauri. In exchange for retrieving the Tesseract, a powerful energy source of unknown potential, the Other promises Loki an army with which he can subjugate Earth. Nick Fury, director of the espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D., and his lieutenant Agent Maria Hill arrive at a remote research facility during an evacuation, where physicist Dr. Erik Selvig is leading a research team experimenting on the Tesseract. Agent Phil Coulson explains that the object has begun radiating an unusual form of energy. The Tesseract suddenly activates and opens a wormhole, allowing Loki to reach Earth. Loki takes the Tesseract and uses his scepter to enslave Selvig and a couple of agents, including Clint Barton, to aid him in his getaway.

In 1585, Catholic Spain ruled by King Philip II of Spain (Jordi Molla) is the most powerful country in the world. Seeing Protestant England as a threat, and in retaliation for English piracy of Spanish ships, Philip declares war. He plans to take over England, and make his daughter Isabella the Queen of England in Elizabeth's place. Meanwhile, Elizabeth I of England (Cate Blanchett) is being pressured to marry by her advisor, Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush). She is ageing and, with no child, the throne will pass to her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots (Samantha Morton). The Queen is presented with portraits of appropriate suitors, but Elizabeth refuses to marry, particularly to the Charles II, Archduke of Austria (Christian Brassington), who has become infatuated with the Queen. English explorer Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen) is presented at Elizabeth's court, having returned from the New World, and offers her potatoes, tobacco, two Native Americans, and gold from a Spanish ship that he claims was "unable to continue its journey". Elizabeth commands that the Native Americans be treated well, and refuses to accept the gold.

In the year 1919, the Opéra Populaire holds a public auction to clear the theatre's vaults. The Vicomte de Chagny purchases a papier-mâché music box in the shape of a monkey and eyes it sadly as Madame Giry, an aged woman dressed in black, watches him. The auctioneer then presents a shattered chandelier as the next item up for bid, explaining that it once played a key role in "the strange affair of the Phantom of the Opéra." As the chandelier is displayed for all to see, it flickers to life and slowly ascends to its original place in the rafters as the audience is transported back in time to the year 1870.
