Owen's parents are Mary Kathleen (née Hitchiner), (b. 1933 in Sussex) a Royal Navy dockyard worker, and Peter Ronald Owen. Owen has a sister, Jill Beatrice Owen (b. 1959). Owen has three children, pop singer Lily Allen, actor Alfie Owen-Allen (both with her ex-husband, Keith Allen) and Sarah Owen, a daughter from a previous relationship. She was also in a relationship with comedian Harry Enfield for many years with whom she raised Alfie, Lily and Sarah. She is now married to the art director Aaron Batterham who has four children.

In 1961, the financially strapped author Pamela "P. L." Travers reluctantly travels from her home in London to Los Angeles to work with Walt Disney at the urging of her agent, Diarmuid Russell. Disney has pursued the film rights to her Mary Poppins stories for twenty years, having promised his daughters that he would produce a film based on them. William Collins (Aaron Johnson) is a depressed teen recovering from self-harm and regularly goes online to chat rooms. One day, he decides to open a chat room himself and calls it "Chelsea Teens!" and where he meets Jim (Matthew Beard), another kid; Eva (Imogen Poots), a model; Emily (Hannah Murray), a goody two-shoes; and Mo (Daniel Kaluuya), a normal kid. There is no real subject matter in "Chelsea Teens!" which instead focuses on the lives of each teen as they talk. Even though they only really communicate through text, the film depicts them in an old hotel-like room and actually having contact.

The Slaters of Wolverhampton are plagued with Mrs. Slater's (Victoria Hamilton) chronic debilitating asthma and her cooking limited to what comes in canned goods that she can heat in boiling water. Mr. Alan Slater (Ken Stott) is sick with worry and has a cantankerous personality. Nigel longs for a life that is more than a succession of canned-food dinners made from what can be heated in boiling water. When dinner is burned, the standard substitute of toast is always served. He loves toast, with the crunchy outside giving way to buttery softness inside. In a short prelude, U.S. Army General Hopgood (Stephen Lang) is painfully thwarted in an attempt to pass paranormally through a solid wall by simply running into it.
