Ann Ayars, née le 23 juillet 1918 à Beverly Hills (Californie) et morte le 27 février 1995 à Hemet (Californie), est une actrice, chanteuse, pédagogue et metteuse en scène américaine (parfois créditée Anne Ayars ou Ann Ayers).

Biography

Au cinéma, Ann Ayars débute dans le moyen métrage musical Fiesta de LeRoy Prinz (1941, avec Jorge Negrete et Armida). Suivent six longs métrages américains sortis en 1942-1943, dont Quelque part en France de Jules Dassin (1942, avec Joan Crawford et John Wayne) ainsi que Et la vie continue de Clarence Brown (1943, avec Mickey Rooney et Frank Morgan).

Par ailleurs chanteuse d'opéra dans la tessiture de soprano, elle se produit de la fin des années 1940 au début des années 1950 au New York City Opera, où elle personnifie notamment Mimi dans La Bohème de Giacomo Puccini (1947-1951) et Violetta dans La traviata de Giuseppe Verdi (1948-1952).

Elle apparaît également sur scène en Europe et ainsi, chante Euridice dans Orfeo ed Euridice de Christoph Willibald Gluck au Festival de Glyndebourne en 1947 (avec Kathleen Ferrier interprétant Orfeo), puis Zerlina dans Don Giovanni de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart au festival d'Édimbourg en 1948 (avec Paolo Silveri dans le rôle-titre).

En raison de cette partie de carrière menée au Royaume-Uni, elle tient le rôle parlé et chanté d'Antonia dans le film britannique Les Contes d'Hoffmann de Michael Powell et Emeric Pressburger (1951, avec Moira Shearer et Ludmila Tcherina, elles doublées au chant), inspiré de l'opéra éponyme de Jacques Offenbach.

Après ce dernier film, elle participe encore pour la télévision américaine à huit séries des années 1960, dont Suspicion (un épisode, 1964) et Mission impossible (un épisode, 1966).

De 1968 à 1987 (année où elle se retire), Ann Ayars enseigne le chant et le piano au collège de San Jacinto en Californie (dénommé Mt. San Jacinto College ) et durant cette période, met en scène une vingtaine de productions d'opéras au Mt. San Jacinto College Opera Theatre (qu'elle dirige), dont The Medium de Gian Carlo Menotti en 1976.

In the prologue, Hoffmann is in the audience at a performance by Stella, a prima ballerina. Stella sends Hoffmann a note asking him to meet her after the performance, but the note is intercepted by his rival, Councillor Lindorf. Not having received her note, Hoffmann goes to the tavern in the interval, where he tells the story of a clown, Kleinzach and three stories of his past loves — Olympia, Giulietta and Antonia, and gets drunk.

1940 in Paris, Michele de la Becque (Joan Crawford) is a career woman in love with industrial designer Robert Cortot (Philip Dorn). Together they enjoy a luxurious lifestyle unfazed by the approach of World War II. After the Battle of France and subsequent German occupation, Michele discovers her lover is socializing with German officers and his plants are manufacturing weapons for them. She confronts him and he does not deny her evidence. She is outraged. She aids a downed American in the Eagle Squadron of the Royal Air Force bomber pilot Pat Talbot (John Wayne) from Pennsylvania and finds herself falling in love with him. Later, she discovers Cortot is turning out defective weapons for the Germans and organizing a French fighting force. Michele is happily reunited with Cortot.

The U.S. has not yet entered World War II when kindly stamp dealer Otto Becker (Conrad Veidt) is unexpectedly visited by his twin brother, Baron Hugo von Detner (also played by Veidt), the new German consul to the U.S. and one of the leaders of a spy ring engaged in sabotage. Tom Folliard (William Lundigan) is released from jail and seeks work at his prior employer, a stagecoach line. He is sent to manage a stagecoach rest stop in a remote area. Upon arrival, he meets a woman, Señora Martinez (Connie Gilchrist) and her daughter Rosalia (Donna Reed) who cook and clean at the rest stop. When the next stage arrives, among its cargo is a strong box with cash. Soon after, Folliard's brother "Trigger" Bill Folliard (Lloyd Nolan), a known outlaw arrives and seekes shelter from the local Apaches, whom he has offended. Upon his discovery that a strong box is present, he plans to steal it and make a getaway. During Tom Folliard's absence from the rest stop, Trigger Bill gets the upper hand on the stagecoach line employees watching him and tries to escape with the proceeds but is thwarted by his brother's arrival back at the rest stop. Soon thereafter, the Apaches attack the rest stop but are repulsed. They demand Trigger Bill and in return they will leave the rest stop alone. After realizing that they won't be able to hold off the Apaches much longer, Trigger Bill attempts to flee but is killed by the pursuing Apaches. Meanwhile, Tom, after a brief flirtation with one of the stagecoach passengers, Constance Selden (Ann Ayars), tells Señora Martinez that he would like to court her daughter.
