Emeric Pressburger (5 December 1902 – 5 February 1988) was a Hungarian-British screenwriter, film director, and producer. He is best known for his series of film collaborations with Michael Powell, in a multiple-award-winning partnership known as The Archers and produced a series of classic British films, notably 49th Parallel (1941), The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), A Matter of Life and Death (1946, also called Stairway to Heaven), Black Narcissus (1947), The Red Shoes (1948), and The Tales of Hoffmann (1951).

Biography

Emeric Pressburger, né Imre József Pressburger, est né à Miskolc, en Hongrie, dans une famille juive hongroise. Après des études aux universités de Prague et de Stuttgart, il commence une carrière de journaliste en Hongrie et en Allemagne. À la fin des années 1920, il devient scénariste pour l'UFA à Berlin. La montée en puissance des Nazis le pousse à l'exil à Paris, où il continue ses activités de scénariste, puis à Londres. Il dira plus tard : « Les pires choses qui me soient arrivées étaient les conséquences politiques d'événements au-delà de mon contrôle... les meilleures étaient exactement les mêmes. »

Il rencontre au Royaume-Uni une petite communauté de cinéastes hongrois ayant fui le nazisme, comme l'influent Alexander Korda, propriétaire de London Films, qui l'engage comme scénariste. Il fait par la suite la connaissance de Michael Powell, avec qui il travaille sur L'Espion noir (1939). La collaboration Powell-Pressburger assure la réalisation des films parmi les plus aboutis du cinéma britannique de cette période.

En 1938, il épouse Agí Donáth, mais le couple divorce en 1941. Il se remarie en 1947 avec Wendy Orme, avec qui il aura un enfant, Angela. Pressburger et Orme divorcent en 1971. Les deux fils d'Angela se sont fait une place de choix dans le cinéma : Andrew Macdonald est le producteur de films comme Trainspotting (1996) et Kevin Macdonald, réalisateur du Dernier Roi d'Écosse (2006), remporte l'Oscar du meilleur film documentaire pour Un jour en septembre en 1999.

Emeric Pressburger devient citoyen britannique en 1946.

Dans les années 1960, il publie deux romans : Killing a Mouse on Sunday, adapté au cinéma sous le titre Et vint le jour de la vengeance (Behold a Pale Horse), un film américain réalisé par Fred Zinnemann en 1964, et The Glass Pearls.

Il devient membre de la BAFTA en 1981 et du British Film Institute en 1983.

Pressburger passe la fin de sa vie à Saxstead, dans le comté anglais de Suffolk, où il meurt d'une pneumonie le 5 février 1988, à l'âge de 85 ans.

During World War II, the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete was occupied by the Nazis. British officers Major Patrick Leigh Fermor DSO (Dirk Bogarde) and Captain Bill Stanley Moss MC (David Oxley) of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) land on the island. With the help of the local Cretan resistance in April 1944, they kidnap General Kreipe (Marius Goring), the commander of the island. They take Kreipe across rough country to a secluded cove on the far side of the island, where they are picked up and taken to Cairo, the Middle East headquarters of British forces.

In 1955 Vienna, during its post-war occupation, the black-market dealer Dr. Falke (Anton Walbrook) moves freely through the French, British, American and Russian sectors, dealing in champagne and caviar amongst the highest echelons of the allied powers. After a costume party, French Colonel Gabriel Eisenstein (Michael Redgrave) plays a practical joke on a drunken Falke, depositing him, asleep and dressed as a bat, in the lap of a patriotic Russian statue, to be discovered the following morning by irate Russian soldiers. Falke is nearly arrested until his friend General Orlofsky (Anthony Quayle) of the USSR intervenes. A vengeful Falke plans an elaborate practical joke on his friend, involving Orlofsky, a British major (Dennis Price), Eisenstein's beautiful wife Rosalinda (Ludmilla Tcherina), her maid (Anneliese Rothenberger) and a masked ball where no one is what they seem. Complicating matters is American Captain Alfred Westerman (Mel Ferrer), an old flame of Rosalinda's who is determined to take advantage of her husband's absence.

In the early months of the Second World War, Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine sends out merchant raiders to attack Allied shipping. The Royal Navy responds with hunting groups whose mission is to stop them. The group that finds the heavily armed pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee near South America is outgunned: Graf Spee is equipped with long-range 11-inch guns, while the British heavy cruiser Exeter has much lighter 8-inch guns, and the light cruisers Ajax and Achilles have 6-inch guns. Sammy Rice (David Farrar) is a British scientist working with a specialist "back room" team in London during World War II. A group of Anglican nuns travel to a remote location in the Himalayas (the Palace of Mopu, near Darjeeling) to set up a school and hospital for the local people, only to find themselves increasingly seduced by the sensuality of their surroundings in a converted seraglio high up in the mountains, and by the local British agent Mr Dean (David Farrar).
