Anna Berger (July 26, 1922 – May 26, 2014) was an American character actress in film and television, who specialized in playing frazzled housewives and matriarchs.

Anna Berger was born in Manhattan on July 26, 1922, the third of eight siblings born to William and Bella Berger. She grew up in the Lower East Side and began acting as a child. After graduating from Seward Park High School, she studied acting in 1948.

She appeared in such films as Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and the Adam Sandler vehicle You Don't Mess with the Zohan (2008), and on such television series as Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Everybody Loves Raymond and NYPD Blue.

Biography

Née au sein d'une fratrie de huit enfants, elle commence à jouer sur scène dès l'enfance. Diplômée de Seward Park High School, elle étudie le théâtre en 1948. Tout au long de sa carrière d'actrice, elle est amenée à jouer des rôles de femmes mûres, et ce même dans ses jeunes années. Alors qu'elle était encore élève à la New School for Social Research de Manhattan, elle est choisie au cours d'un atelier dramatique pour incarner Juno Boyle, une mère irlandaise issue de la classe ouvrière dans une production de Seán O'Casey : Junon et le Paon, (Juno and the Paycock).

Par la suite, sa carrière compte de nombreuses apparitions qui mettant en scène le même type de personnages. Elle joue une passagère prise en otage dans Les Pirates du métro en 1974, Tante May dans Crimes et délits de Woody Allen en 1989, la mère de Seymour dans Ghost World en 2001 et un petit rôle de vieille dame dans la comédie Rien que pour vos cheveux de Dennis Dugan en 2008. Sur le petit écran, elle incarne Cookie Cirillo, une vieille italo-américaine acariâtre dans la série Les Soprano. Elle tient aussi de petits rôles dans les séries Tout le monde aime Raymond et New York Police Blues.

Résidant dans le Upper West Side, elle s'éteint le 26 mai 2014, âgée de 91 ans. Mariée, Anna Berger était la mère de deux filles, dont l'actrice Joanna Sanchez.

A 17-year-old Manhattan student, Lisa Cohen, shopping on the Upper West Side, interacts with bus driver Gerald Maretti as she runs alongside his moving bus; he allows himself to become distracted, leading to a fatal accident by missing a red light, in which a pedestrian, Monica Patterson, is hit by the bus and subsequently dies in Lisa's arms. Initially, Lisa reports to the police that the driver had a green traffic signal, but later, out of remorse, changes her story. She confronts Maretti, who first pretends to have forgotten the details of the accident, and then reveals to her in anger that he does remember them, but believes he did nothing wrong, causing Lisa to pursue his firing from the company with passion. In collaboration with Monica's best friend, Emily, and cousin, Abigail, Lisa ultimately becomes involved in a wrongful death lawsuit against the Metropolitan Transit Authority, seeking the dismissal of the driver (who is revealed to have caused two previous accidents), as well as monetary damages, which would be awarded to the victim's next of kin, her cousin. Meanwhile, Lisa's life takes various turns, including a flirtation with her math teacher, Aaron Caije, her decision to lose her virginity to a classmate, Paul Hirsch, and various vehement debates about politics and terrorism with classmates.
