À Berlin, en 1961. Konrad et Sophie, deux jeunes étudiants amoureux vivant à Berlin-Est tentent de passer à l’Ouest par les égouts, peu après la construction du mur. Ils sont séparés lors de leur fuite, seule Sophie parvenant à passer à l'Ouest. Konrad est enrôlé dans l’armée puis suit des études scientifiques. Il souffre beaucoup de l'omniprésence de la Stasi. Les deux amoureux se retrouvent à Prague en 1968, lors du Printemps de Prague. Ils décident de vivre ensemble dans la capitale de la Tchécoslovaquie mais sont à nouveau séparés par l'invasion soviétique. Sophie attend un enfant de Konrad. Cet enfant leur permet de se rencontrer de loin en loin. Ils se marient tous les deux de leur côté, abandonnant l'espoir de vivre ensemble. Vingt-sept ans après leur séparation, Konrad et Sophie se retrouvent au milieu de Berlinois en liesse. Nous sommes le 9 novembre 1989.

Margit Fließer (Jutta Hoffmann) is in her mid-thirties, has two children and has been divorced twice. She works as a mathematician in a medium-sized company where she is well respected by her colleagues. Margit has a shy and repressed personality due to her past and her childhood. Margit became a nurse in a Protestant order following the early death of her mother. Realizing that this vocation is not really for her she starts her studies at a university preparatory school. She falls in love with the lecturer Bachmann (Peter Köhncke), who becomes her first husband. The marriage fails, and she enters a second marriage with a blind man (Armin Mueller-Stahl). But her new husband is a disappointment and this second marriage also fails. She now decides to find "her third" husband herself and not leaving it up to fate. She chooses Hrdlitschka (Rolf Ludwig), a colleague, but only after some efforts and with the help of her friend Lucie (Barbara Dittus) she is successful and wins Hrdlitschka as her third husband.

On 8 May 1945, the day of Germany's surrender at the end of World War II, exiled communist Erich Braun returns along with the Red Army to his native city of Dresden, only three months after it was devastated in aerial bombardment. He aids a group of Soviet soldiers to recover the art of the Old Masters Picture Gallery from the ruins of the Zwinger Palace. During the next five days, while searching for the collection, he encounters several of the city's residents who have also returned from the war. Although they distrust the Soviets at first, they eventually assist them to recover the pictures.

Students Dieter and Sonja, who are a couple for several years, attend a masquerade. Dieter confuses young Siegi with his friend and dances with her. The two new couples go on vacation in the Baltic Sea, where they encounter each other several times while enjoying the local attractions. They all resolve to marry their new partners. Only when they are headed toward the same registration office, do they realize their behavior was motivated by spite and anger. They again switch partners: Sonja marries Dieter and Siegi marries Edy.
