Barkha is an Indian Army Brat, who spent her formative years roaming from one military town to another with her father, who was a Colonel. She is the youngest of three sisters, the eldest being a hotel management professional and the elder a fashion designer. She was very popular amongst her childhood friends, especially in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Fort William. She was also voted as the NDA Queen, in Dec 2000, where she was escorted by her old friend, S Ganguly. She is married to Indraneil Sengupta, her fellow actor and co-star from Pyaar ke do naam...Ek Radha Ek Shyaam and Doli Saja Ke. The couple tied the knot on 2 March 2008 after a two-year courtship. Dimpy Singh (Madalsa Sharma), approaches Samrat Tilakdhari (Rajeev Khandelwal), a private investigator, with a strange case. Their garden got ruined for reasons that appear natural but are not known; leading horticulturists have examined the fading plants but they have not been able to identify the probable reason. In a Gujarati village, Ranjaar, infamous for its uninhibited manufacture and sale of arms and ammunition (weapons are sold like vegetables at the place), two clans, Rajadi and Sanera, have been at odds with each other for the past 500 years. The film opens with a violent altercation between the two over petty matters. Meghji (Abhimanyu Singh), a Rajadi head, sets out to kill Bhavani (Gulshan Devaiah) who is a Sanera, after the latter tries to kill the former's son. Bhavani is almost killed but Ram (Ranveer Singh), Meghji's younger brother, intervenes and saves him, only to be reprimanded by Meghji. All the Rajadi elders are irked by Ram's mindset of making truce with the other clan.

The film begins with a quick flashback into the life of Bharti Rai (Nikhila Trikha), the daughter of chief minister Ramnath Rai (Darshan Jariwala). Influenced by leftist ideology, she rebels against her father and joins the rival party of leftist leader Bhaskar Sanyal (Naseeruddin Shah). Bharti develops an illicit relationship with Bhaskar, who, guilt-ridden over taking advantage of the younger woman, leaves for parts unknown, having unwittingly gotten Bharti pregnant.
