Abel Morales (Oscar Isaac) is the owner of Standard Heating Oil Co, an up-and-coming company. The company has been plagued by the hijacking of several trucks, each carrying thousands of dollars in heating oil. The film opens with the wedding of a Nigerian couple, Ayodele (Issach de Bankolé) and Adenike (Danai Gurira) Balogen. Adenike is given fertility beads by her mother-in-law, Ma Ayo (Bukky Ajayi) and although the couple make love on their first night of marriage, Adenike struggles to become pregnant. Mariana (Mendoza) is a Colombian immigrant who has recently traveled to New York with her two children, 10-year-old Gabriel (Sebastian Villada Lopez) and 6-year-old Andrea (Laura Montana Cortez) in order to be reunited with her husband Antonio (Andres Munar).
