A group of boys, evacuated during World War II from London to a coastal town, form a gang and play war games. Too young to fight in the war and afraid it will be over by the time they come of age, the group members, who are also in the school's Army Cadet Force initiate a battle with the local teenagers. Curlew, a local youth, invites an Austrian Jewish refugee with whom he has formed a close relationship to take part in the shenanigans. At first the Jewish boy, Stein, is scorned because of his "Germanic" heritage but is later allowed to join. When Stein runs off during a fight, the youths decide to give him a fake court-martial and execution, but real bullets are used by a freak mistake and Stein is killed.

After poisoning his wife, the master of the house (Stewart Granger) is blackmailed by his Cockney maid Lily Watkins (Jean Simmons), who demands promotion. As she steadily takes the place of his dead wife, he again attempts murder. While attempting to murder Lily, by following someone who looked like her through the fog, he mistakenly kills Constable Burke's wife and gets chased by an angry mob, which he evades. Lily returns home and Stephen learns of his mistake. Some local bar goers saw him murder Mrs Burke and Stephen is put on trial, but their claims are dismissed after it is revealed they drink a lot and Lily lies to provide an alibi.

Alan Curtis (Kennedy), an American real estate agent living in England is dissatisfied with what he believes to be his humdrum life. One weekend while his wife Elizabeth (Shelton) is on a lengthy vacation visiting her mother, he gives a ride to sultry nightclubsinger Lila (Smith) when he finds her stranded on the road. When Curtis gets romantically involved with her Lila tells him that her brother has gotten in trouble over a jewel robbery. In truth, Lila desperately wants the stones for herself. She tricks the wayward Curtis into believing that he killed a man after he buys them two tickets out of the country. He then decides that it is better to face the music, and opts to stay and confess. Lila, too reconsiders, and decides to stay with him until his name is cleared. After the true killers are revealed Lila goes to jail as a participant in the robbery and Curtis returns to his wife, who forgives him.
