Le sergent Eustis Clay (Steve McQueen), esprit un peu simplet, a pour ami le sergent Maxwell Slaughter (Jackie Gleason). Cependant Maxwell ne se fait pas d'illusion sur la suite de cette relation platonique avec la jeune fille et se résigne à rester vieux garçon. Au cours d'une bagarre dans un bar, opposant Eustis à deux sous-officiers sadiques, Maxwell venu défendre son copain, est victime d'un malaise cardiaque et décède, peu de temps après, à l’hôpital après une ultime visite que lui fait Eustis. Resté seul et déboussolé, ce dernier signe un nouveau contrat pour rester dans l'armée.
