Le film se déroule à Yopougon, un quartier populaire d'Abidjan, en Côte d'Ivoire, à la fin des années 1970, et suit la vie sentimentale et familiale d'un groupe d'adolescentes. Tandis qu'Aya se consacre essentiellement à ses études, ses amies Adjoua et Bintou pensent surtout à sortir le soir pour « gazer » (draguer) dans les « maquis » (les bars dansants), dans l'espoir de sortir avec un garçon malgré la surveillance de leurs familles qui redoutent les « génitos » (les séducteurs sans scrupules). Adjoua noue une relation avec un jeune homme, Moussa, le fils de Bonaventure Sissoko, l'un des hommes les plus riches du pays. Mais les choses se compliquent notablement lorsqu'elle se retrouve enceinte.

A cleaner goes into the office of a banker. He tells the staff to leave then proceeds to change into a suit and place a picture on the desk of two brothers. Lardier, a courier, arrives and the man proceeds to explain to him that he has several financial options available. However a cell phones rings and Lardier hands it over to the man. The caller, who is angry, shouts down the phone. Uncomfortable the man tries to leave but is shot with a silenced pistol several times by Lardier. The man who died was the brother of Cash.

Hortense (Mata Gabin), a nurse of African origin in her forties, abandons her family to be with her lover, Jean-Paul – an oyster cultivator in the Arcachon Bay. Her husband, Malik (Marius Yelolo) remains in denial about his wife's departure as he is left to look after their children – two boys aged 12 and 6. Michel is a Belgian inventor. He cares for his father, a paralysed writer, is married to a Congolese woman and is the father of an interracial child whom he reassures as to his parentage. He discovers at the age of 41 that he was adopted, actually having been born in Sainte-Cécile, Quebec. In the summer of 2000, he travels to Quebec, supposedly to sell some of his inventions. While on a near-impossible quest to find his birth family in the town where he was born, he crosses paths with Louis Legros, son of another inventor, in a meeting which will change their lives.
