The Vicious Brothers are a duo consisting Canadian filmmakers Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz. They are best known for writing and directing the cult horror film, Grave Encounters and for writing and producing its sequel, Grave Encounters 2. His next project, The Visitors, originally planned for release in the coming year. It will be written by themselves and solo directed by Colin Minihan.

Jerry Hartfield, the producer of Grave Encounters, a famous ghost investigation television series, explains that Grave Encounters was cancelled in 2003 after the fifth episode, when the cast and crew, along with the footage for episode six, mysteriously went missing. The footage was finally recovered in 2010 and brought to Hartfield. In it, the show's host Lance Preston, along with occult specialist Sasha Parker, surveillance operator Matt White, cameraman T.C. Gibson, and fake medium Houston Grey, investigates the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, where many instances of paranormal activity have been reported since its closure.

The film begins with a woman (Emily Perkins) who runs to a nearby shop wanting to use the phone. She enters a phone booth, but is taken by an unknown creature. April (Brittany Allen) and her boyfriend Kyle (Freddie Stroma) are planning to go to her parents cabin for a romantic weekend alone, however she finds out that Kyle has invited his annoying friend Seth (Jesse Moss), Seth's girlfriend Lex (Anja Savcic), and another friend named Melanie (Melanie Papalia) along. Along the way, Seth sets off fireworks in the car and they are pulled over by Sheriff Murphy (Gil Bellows) who gives them a warning before letting them go. They finally make it to the cabin and begin drinking and smoking marijuana. Later on, Kyle proposes to April, which April rejects, angering Kyle. Suddenly they see something crash in the woods and upon investigating find that it's a UFO. After returning to the cabin they hear noises upstairs, and after getting April's father's gun find nothing but an open door. After finding an alien on the patio they shoot it to death. They then try and drive to town but find that the road is blocked.

Film student Alex Wright and his friends Jennifer Parker, Trevor Thompson, Tessa Hamill, and Jared Lee all decide to produce a documentary about the original Grave Encounters movie, which the entire public aside from Alex believes to be fake. Alex posts an online plea for any information about the film and receives a message from someone named "DeathAwaits6". The message leads him to the mother of Sean Rogerson, the actor who played Lance in Grave Encounters. She believes that Sean is still alive but they discover that she has severe dementia.
