David Alan Bailey (born April 4, 1952) is an American former actor, sometimes credited as David A. Bailey or simply David Bailey. Beginning a professional career as a child actor at the age of ten, Bailey is perhaps best known for his recurring roles on numerous popular television series of the 1960s and 1970s; including Dennis the Menace, The Andy Griffith Show, and Room 222, as well as for his feature film roles; as a young Robert Peale in the United Artists dramatic biopic, One Man's Way, as Matthew O'Brien in the "kiddie matinee" fantasy film, At the End of the Rainbow (aka: The Princess and the Magic Frog), and as "Rob" in the Walt Disney action-adventure drama, Adventure in Satan's Canyon. With his wholesome looks and endearing demeanor, Bailey was primarily cast as the typical all-American boy-next-door throughout most of his career as a child star.

An elderly woman, nicknamed "Peege" and played by Jeanette Nolan, lives in a nursing home where she is suffering from blindness and ailing mental faculties. Her family makes regular visits to her every Christmas, but her poor health makes these occasions awkward for everyone else. The conversation is stilted until the family goes to leave, when one of the grandsons (Bruce Davison) remains behind briefly. He recounts to his grandmother that when he was a young boy her laugh would "always make [him] happy", before tearfully departing, unaware if he has communicated with her. After his exit, the camera lingers on her face and her expression subtly shows he was successful.

The film opens by a lake on Saint Patrick's Day as the story's young hero, an Irish boy named Matthew O'Brien (David Alan Bailey), is playing hooky from school and fishing with his best friend, Timothy Ryan (Ernest Vaio). As the time approaches to return home, the two boys go their separate ways and Matt soon finds a magic frog which he places in his pocket. Deciding to take a short-cut home through the woods, Matt quickly finds himself lost and soon encounters a leprechaun (Frank Delfino) whose beard is caught in a log. Matt, remembering the old Irish legends he's heard from his grandfather, agrees to help the little man on the condition that he give Matt his bag of gold, to which, according to legend, Matt knows the leprechaun cannot refuse. After freeing the little man, Matt soon learns that the seven gold coins in the bag are not ordinary coins, but magic "wishing coins", which only have power when used to do good for others. After warning Matt of the magic of the coins, the leprechaun promptly scampers off and vanishes into the woods, leaving the boy to find his own way out of the forest.
