Derek Wayne Johnson (born February 23, 1983) is an American film director, screenwriter, film producer, and actor.

Born and raised in Carthage, Texas, Johnson began acting and filmmaking at an early age winning several awards for short films while still in high school. In his senior year of film school, Johnson completed his first feature film as a director. After college he formed a production company, AJ16 Entertainment, specializing in producing feature films and documentaries. Before moving to Los Angeles, California, Johnson got his start in the film business by writing, directing, producing and acting in what is now known as Hollywood South, a name given to the thriving film industry in Texas and Louisiana.

In 2014 Johnson began production on a documentary about Academy Award-winning director John G. Avildsen whose credits include Joe (1970 film), Save the Tiger (1973), Rocky (1976), The Karate Kid (1984), Lean on Me (film) (1989), and many other hits. The documentary, entitled John G. Avildsen: King of the Underdogs (2016), will examine the life, career and films of the legendary director and features interviews with Sylvester Stallone, Ralph Macchio, Martin Scorsese, Jerry Weintraub, Burt Reynolds and many more. The documentary is a companion to the new book The Films of John G. Avildsen: Rocky, The Karate Kid, and Other Underdogs written by Larry Powell and Tom Garrett.

Johnson released his third feature film, the award winning drama thriller Broken Blood (2013), on digital download and DVD. His fourth feature film Scrape (2015), a horror thriller, is set for worldwide release in 2015.

The film opens on a close-up of a frightened woman's eyes. The camera pulls back to reveal that she's undergoing a blind tasting of coffee by local TV reporter CJ Nicholas (Jesse Metcalfe). He heads to the courthouse to watch Shreveport District Attorney Mark Hunter (Michael Douglas) give his final argument on a murder case. CJ pigeonholes Assistant D.A. Ella Crystal (Amber Tamblyn) afterward and asks her for the videotape of the murderer's interrogation. He also presses her for a date. She reluctantly agrees to both.

The film's plot is loosely adapted from "The Austin Road Trip Story" in Max's book I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. A tireless and charismatic novelty seeker, Tucker (Matt Czuchry) tricks his buddy Dan (Geoff Stults) into lying to his fiancée Kristy (Keri Lynn Pratt), so they can go to a legendary strip club three and a half hours away to celebrate Dan’s last days of bachelorhood in proper style.
