Dorothy Ruth Hoogstraten (February 28, 1960 – August 14, 1980), who took the stage name Dorothy Stratten, was a Canadian Playboy Playmate, model, and actress. Stratten was the Playboy Playmate of the Month for August 1979, Playmate of the Year in 1980 and was the second Playmate (after Lee Ann Michelle) born in the 1960s. Stratten appeared in three comedy films and in at least two episodes of shows broadcast on US network television. She was murdered at the age of 20 by her estranged husband/manager Paul Snider, who committed suicide on the same day. Her death inspired two motion pictures.

En 1980, elle est élue « Playmate de l'année 1980 ». Elle tient la vedette du film de science-fiction parodique Galaxina, qui sort en juin 1980, puis obtient un rôle dans Et tout le monde riait. Pendant le tournage de ce dernier film - son premier pour un studio important - elle a une liaison avec le réalisateur, Peter Bogdanovich.
En août 1980, Dorothy Stratten et Paul Snider entament une procédure de divorce. Le 14 août, Snider, qui reproche à Dorothy sa liaison avec Bogdanovich, retrouve son épouse dans son appartement de Los Angeles et la viole, puis la tue avant de se suicider.
L'histoire tragique de l'actrice a inspiré en 1981 le téléfilm Death of a Centerfold: The Dorothy Stratten Story, avec Jamie Lee Curtis dans le rôle de Dorothy Stratten, et en 1983 le film Star 80, où elle est interprétée par Mariel Hemingway.
Peter Bogdanovich a consacré le livre The Killing of the Unicorn (Le Meurtre de la licorne) à l'histoire de Dorothy Stratten. En 1988, le réalisateur a épousé la sœur de Dorothy Stratten, Louise, dont il a divorcé en 2001.
La chanson The Best Was Yet to Come, sur l'album Cuts like a knife du rocker canadien Bryan Adams, est écrite en hommage à Dorothy Stratten.

In the year 3008, the crew of the Intergalactic Space Police cruiser Infinity is on patrol duty in deep space. In the (then-near future) year 1998, the USA has run out of oil, and many Americans are living in their now-stationary cars and using other non-gas-powered means of transportation such as jogging, riding bicycles and rollerskating. Many Americans wear sweatsuits. In search of leadership, Americans elect Chet Roosevelt (Ritter) as President. Roosevelt, a "cosmically inspired" former governor of California, proves to have little else in common with Teddy Roosevelt or FDR other than his name. Roosevelt, an overly-optimistic man who quotes positive affirmation slogans, stages a number of highly publicized fund raising events, all of which fail. Real money comes in the form of loans from a cartel of Native Americans, led by billionaire Sam Birdwater (George), in control of Nike (which has been renamed "National Indian Knitting Enterprise").
