Edouard Nikolaïevitch Artemiev (en russe : Эдуард Николаевич Артемьев), né le 30 novembre 1937 à Novossibirsk, est un compositeur russe (et soviétique) de musique électronique et de musique de film. Il est surtout connu pour ses musiques des films d'Andreï Tarkovski, Nikita Mikhalkov (par exemple Oblomov, Urga et Soleil trompeur), Andreï Kontchalovski.

Biography

Élève de Iouri Chaporine au Conservatoire Tchaïkovski de Moscou, Edouard Artemiev en sort diplômé en 1960.
Il a été un des premiers compositeurs à utiliser la musique électronique pour une musique de film sur Solaris notamment. Il collabore pendant plusieurs années avec l'ingénieur du son et concepteur du Synthétiseur ANS Evgueni Mourzine .

Il est connu pour avoir composé les thèmes musicaux des films d'Andreï Tarkovski Solaris (1972), Le Miroir (1975) et Stalker (1979).

Membre de l'Union des compositeurs et de l'Union cinématographique, il fonde en 1990, l'association de musique électroacoustique de Russie.

Il a été récompensé par de nombreux prix, dont quatre prix Nika.

Son thème "The Death of the Hero" pour Sibériade a été repris par le groupe PPK et fut un succès en 2002.

The story is set in a prisoner of war camp in November 1920, in the Crimea, after the evacuation of the White Army, with several dozen thousand of White officers left behind on the peninsula. The officers are unaware of their impending doom, waiting for their fate to be decided by the Red Army officials. One of them —an unnamed captain (Mārtiņš Kalita) —is haunted by the memories of a dramatic and brief romance of 1907 and tries to understand how the Russian Empire fell apart and who is to blame.

The jury decides whether a young Chechen boy is guilty of the murder of his stepfather, a Russian military officer. Initially it seems that the boy was the murderer. However, one of the jurors (Sergei Makovetsky) votes in favour of acquittal. Since the verdict must be rendered unanimously, the jurors review the case, and one by one come to the conclusion that the boy was framed. The murder was performed by criminals involved in the construction business. The discussion is repeatedly interrupted by flashbacks from the boy's wartime childhood.

The film is set during the Khrushchev Thaw in Soviet Crimea, Ukraine, and concentrates on a young cadet in the Red Army named Viktor (Igor Petrenko), who becomes a chauffeur for a general (Bohdan Stupka) and begins a relationship with the general's disabled and volatile daughter, Vera (Alena Babenko). Viktor becomes involuntarily involved in a plot by the KGB whereby KGB agent Saveliev (Andrei Panin) pushes Viktor to spy on the general for KGB purposes. Odysseus (Armand Assante), the king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Ithaca, is called to service in the Trojan War after the birth of his son Telemachus, much to the dismay of his wife Queen Penelope (Greta Scacchi). Odysseus is worried that he may not return, and tells Penelope that she should remarry by the time Telemachus is a man if he does not return. The war lasts ten years, during which Greece's best soldier, Achilles (Richard Trewett), is killed and the Greeks avenge him by using a giant horse to sneak inside and destroy the city of Troy. Laocoön (Heathcote Williams) tries to warn the Trojans of a vision of this, but is suddenly devoured by a sea monster. On the way back, Odysseus' ego gets the best of him and he tells the gods that he did it himself, which angers Poseidon (voiced by Miles Anderson) so much that he promises to make Odysseus' journey home to Penelope nearly impossible, mentioning that it was he who sent the sea monster to devour Laocoön.
