Police Inspector Dillon (Cyril Cusack) reluctantly sets out to see an old friend, Dan O'Flaherty (Noel Purcell). Along the way, he encounters Mickey J. (Jack MacGowran), a poitín maker who, fortunately for him, is not Dillon's target today. The inspector has the unfortunate duty of serving a warrant on O'Flaherty for striking Phelim O'Feeney (John Cowley) on the head. O'Flaherty refuses to pay the fine, as he feels he has done nothing wrong, nor will he allow O'Feeney to pay it for him. Instead, he heads off to prison.

A young woman is acquitted by the jury over the murder of her husband, who died in suspicious circumstances. The film then flashes back to portray the events leading up to his death. Sally Raynor's aviator husband Martin has been missing for two years and is believed dead, during which time she has fallen in love with a local doctor who she plans to marry. When her husband unexpectedly returns from Brazil still alive, she decides to give up Doctor Harper and go back to live with him. Soon her husband's erratic behaviour, brought on by his ordeals, makes her believe he is insane. On one of his wild night time walks, he appears to have killed someone. His wife plans to kill him to protect him from society's punishment, but before she does he commits suicide. Although technically innocent of his death, she is haunted by guilt and even after a jury clears her of murder she is hesitant to murder the Doctor she loves.

Promising writer Christopher Drew conceals his relationship with a murdered woman in order to protect his career, even though this results in an innocent man going to prison for the killing. The upper-class Drew decides he needs some first-hand experience to invigorate his work, so he explores the seedier areas of town in search of inspiration. Much to his dismay, he witnesses a murder but refuses to help an innocent man, Herbert Logan, arrested for the crime, because his presence in such a neighbourhood would cause a scandal. Logan is freed after serving 15 years in jail and he hears his "crime" detailed on a radio drama written by Drew, which enables him to gather enough evidence to finally clear his name.

Major Bright and Captain Early are intelligence officers in the British army of occupation in post-World War 2 Germany. Uncertain what to do in civvy street, they decide to utilise the "skills" they learned in the army and set up a private detective agency, "Bright and Early".
