Mat is an aging, worn police officer. One day he is present when a criminal takes a female hostage in order to use the woman as a human shield. Mat refutes this strategy by shooting the man dead. The hostage remains unharmed but Mat knows all too well his action could have gone awry very easily. So afterwards he throws up and indulges himself to binge drinking. His constant enervation and his alcoholism have rendered him unacceptable as a law enforcer. When he is about to get sacked a former buddy contacts him. Franck has switched sides a long time ago and feels Mat would now be ready to condone this. But in spite of his misery Mat hesitates to become a drug trafficker. As fickle as he is it can work out either way.

Abel Tiffauges (Malkovich) is a simple Frenchman at the start of World War II, who loves animals and children. In Nazi occupied France, Jean Blomart sits by a bed in which his lover Hélène lies dying. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn about both characters and their relationship to each other. As a young man filled with guilt about his privileged middle-class life, Jean joins the Communist Party and breaks from his family, determined to make his own way in life. After the death of a friend in a political protest, for which he feels guilty, Jean quits the Party and concentrates on trade union activities. Hélène is a young designer who works in her family's confectionary shop and is dissatisfied with her conventional romance with her fiance Paul. She contrives to meet Jean, and although he initially rejects her, they form a relationship after she has an abortion following a reckless liaison with another man. Jean tells Hélène he loves her even though he believes he does not. He proposes to her and she accepts.
