In Rome, in the 1980s, famous Italian film director Salvatore Di Vita returns home late one evening, where his girlfriend sleepily tells him that his mother called to say someone named Alfredo has died. Salvatore obviously shies from committed relationships and has not been to his home village of Giancaldo, Sicily in 30 years. As his girlfriend asks him who Alfredo is, Salvatore flashes back to his childhood.

A young woman hanging clothes on a line happily points out the arrival of "manine" or puffballs floating on the wind. A Roman small-time crook, Cosimo, is arrested for the attempted theft of a car. After he is convicted and put in prison, he starts haranguing his girlfriend and former accomplices by telling them that he has a plan for a heist but that he needs their help to be freed. In order to assure his release, they find an acquaintance named Peppe (Vittorio Gassman) with a clean criminal record to take the blame for the theft in the hope that the police will release Cosimo. They instead have both of them jailed. While Peppe is in jail, Cosimo tells him the plans for the heist of a safe in a pawnshop. Peppe then reveals that he got off merely with probation, leaving him free to pursue the heist without Cosimo, much to his chagrin.

Ferdinando Cefalù (Marcello Mastroianni), an impoverished Sicilian nobleman, is married to Rosalia (Daniela Rocca), an unattractive but devoted wife. The king of Crete, Cadmos, has just murdered his wife in order to live with his scheming lover Ermione. For this deed, a prophetess curses him in the name of the gods, foretelling him that the man his infant daughter Antiope would one day fall in love with will eventually be his doom. Furious at the gods' judgement and unable to kill Antiope on the spot (lest the curse would fulfill itself immediately), megalomanic Cadmos renounces the gods and proclaims himself one. To this end, he and Ermione undergo a treatment with mystical vapors which render their bodies invulnerable (save for one critical spot on Ermione's chest uncautiously left covered).

In the village of Assola, divided in half by the French-Italian border, the smuggler living Neapolitan Giuseppe La Paglia (Toto) and the French customs officer Ferdinand Pastorelli (Fernandel). On the feast day of the town on the French side, Ferdinand Joseph stopped arriving late to the traditional parade that was to bring the French flag, and during the following reception of the hotel two borders, which is divided in half by the border, Joseph discovered that Ferdinand was born Italian mother and an unknown father in the kitchen of the restaurant which is located in the Italian part of the hotel, for which, though recorded at the French Ministry, the customs officer, is actually Italian and is not entitled to exercise the profession. A subsequent audit at the municipality of Assola, Ferdinand discovers that those who recorded the birth years before, Gaspar Donnadiè, owner of the two borders, failed to register there, while it was the Italian municipality. The same Donaddiè tells Ferdinand that he went to the town hall French because it was raining that day and it was closer than the Italian one.

Subsequently Mr Hendrix negotiates the price with Mrs Osborne, the owner of the "Dragoon". Little later, after corpses of murdered strangers are found on the beach, Cournot finds himself interrogated by police because Mr Hendrix and the "Dragoon" have disappeared while Mrs Osborne pretends to be unaware of any deal.
