The story centers on two women. Catherine (Theresa Russell) is a psychopathic femme fatale whose true name and motivation are never known. In the summer of 1957, Dani Trant (Reese Witherspoon) is a 14-year-old girl in Louisiana who, according to her father, is "too big to be running off by herself." Dani and her older sister Maureen (Emily Warfield), who is going off to college in the fall, are very close. Maureen helps take care of their younger sister, Missy, while their mother Abigail (Tess Harper) is pregnant. Dani however prefers to run off into the neighbor's pond to go swimming in the nude. It is here that she meets her new neighbor, 17-year-old Court Foster (Jason London). Court kicks Dani out of his pond. When Dani goes home, her mother tells her to wash up because an old friend is coming for dinner with her children. The Trants' old friend turns out to be a widow, Mrs. Foster (Gail Strickland) with her three sons Court, Dennis, and Rob. When Dani realizes who Court is, the two dislike each other. Court calls Dani "a little girl". When Dani's father Matthew (Sam Waterston) tells Dani to accompany Court into town for groceries, Dani and Court drive into town and start to get along. Dani finally realizes that she is in love with Court.

Annelle Dupuy (Daryl Hannah), a reserved and ditzy beauty school graduate, is hired by Truvy Jones (Dolly Parton) to work in her home-based beauty salon in northwestern Louisiana. An intruder in a black mask and clothing ties up San Francisco socialite Page Forrester at her remote beach house and kills her with a hunting knife with a jagged edge. He writes the word "Bitch" on the wall with her blood. Her husband Jack (Bridges) later recovers in a clinic with a bloody head wound, claiming to have been knocked unconscious and awoken to find Page's body. After her funeral, he is arrested for her murder by DA Thomas Krasny, based on evidence that includes a witness at a club who saw a hunting knife in Jack's locker; medical suggestion that Jack's head wound was self-inflicted; Jack's fingerprints being at the crime scene with Page's; and Jack inheriting all of Page's corporate and personal assets in the event of her death. Forrester tries to hire high-profile lawyer Teddy Barnes to defend him after hearing of her high success rate. Barnes, however, used to work for Krasny, and is reluctant to take the case as she stopped working in criminal law after an incident with him.

It is the year 1935 and Waxahachie, Texas is a small, segregated town in the midst of a depression. The story focuses on two beleaguered New Yorkers: Donald Quinelle (Williams), a simple office worker who is fired from his job, and Sonny Paluso (Matthau), a gas station owner whose station is accidentally blown up by Donald. The two men meet in a restaurant which is promptly robbed by a man in a ski mask (Jerry Reed). Donald is shot, but Sonny gets a good look at the man. Nick Gardenia (Chevy Chase), an out-of-luck writer, has the use of a friend's oceanside cabin in Big Sur, California. He is interrupted by a pair of bank robbers, Warren 'Dex' Dexter (Judd Omen) and B.G. Ramone (Marc Alaimo), who use Nick to rob a bank in Carmel. Their modus operandi is to take an innocent person and force them at gunpoint to rob banks, take the money and toss their captive out of their moving car. Unfortunately for Nick (as in one of Chase's signature pratfalls), he trips in the bank, is helped up and looks directly into a security camera.
