Georges Caristan est un directeur de la photographie et réalisateur français.

Biography

D'ascendance guyanaise mais né au Vietnam, Georges Caristan est d'abord formé par Paulin Soumanou Vieyra puis il étudie le cinéma en France à l'IDHEC (ancêtre de la Fémis) et deviendra l'un des pionniers du cinéma sénagalais.

Il est le premier chef-opérateur sénégalais, il travaille sur de nombreux films d'Ousmane Sembene, Mahama Johnson Traore, de Paulin Soumanou Vieyra.

Son fils Robert Caristan suivra sa voie et fera partie de la seconde génération des chefs-operateur sénégalais.

In Senegal, sometime after the establishment of a European presence in the area but before the imposition of direct French colonial administration, the Ceddo ("commoners") try to preserve their traditional culture against the onslaught of Islam, Christianity, and the slave trade. When local king Demba War sides with the Muslims, the Ceddo abduct his daughter, Dior Yacine, to protest their forced conversion to Islam. After trying to rescue the princess, various heirs to the throne are killed, and Demba War is killed during the night. Eventually the kidnappers are killed and Dior Yacine is brought back to the village to confront the imam, just as all the villagers are being given Muslim names.

El Hadji Abdoukader Beye, a Senegalese businessman, takes on a third wife, thereby demonstrating his social and economic success. At the beginning, he suspects his two wives, without realizing that he walks by the true guilty party every day. En 1942 en Casamance, dans le Sud du Sénégal, l'administration pétainiste cède le pouvoir aux hommes du Général de Gaulle. L'armée décide de réquisitionner des vivres dans le petit village de Efock.
