Après avoir vu sa pièce Anima nera portée à l'écran par Roberto Rossellini, il triomphe en adaptant lui-même sa pièce Disons, un soir à dîner avec Jean-Louis Trintignant et Annie Girardot.Il dirigea Charlotte Rampling, Elizabeth Taylor, Marcello Mastroianni, Laura Antonelli, Florinda Bolkan, Terence Stamp, Fabio Testi dans des mélodrames sexuels aussi raffinés que morbides.

Michael Parker is a successful American businessman living in Italy with his girlfriend Hélène. Au bout d'un an, ils finissent par trouver une très jolie jeune femme, sourde et muette. Pour réunir plus d'argent et améliorer leur habitation (une pauvre baraque en zone industrielle), ils organisent un faux suicide de la jeune épousée, du sommet du Colisée. Malheureusement, celle-ci glisse sur une peau de banane et meurt réellement.
