Michele (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is a successful bourgeois playwright who fantasizes an affair between his beautiful wife, Nina (Florinda Bolkan), and his best friend, Max (Tony Musante), a bisexual actor. Unbeknownst to him, the pair have in fact been lovers for years, though Max is really in love with Michele. While Nina is occupied with Max, Michele drifts into an affair with a rich, but lonely, single woman (Annie Girardot). Michael Parker is a successful American businessman living in Italy with his girlfriend Hélène. New Orleans, 1937: Catherine Holly (Elizabeth Taylor) is a young woman institutionalized for a severe emotional disturbance that occurred when her cousin, Sebastian Venable, died under questionable circumstances while they were on summer holiday in Europe. The late Sebastian's wealthy mother, Violet Venable (Katharine Hepburn), makes every effort to deny and suppress the potentially sordid truth about her son and his demise. Joseph Rearden, a British Intelligence agent, arrives in London and makes a rendezvous with MacKintosh, the head of his organisation, in a discreet office located just off Trafalgar Square. MacKintosh and his deputy, Mrs Smith, inform him of a simple way to steal diamonds which are transported via the post service to avoid attention. This he does, apparently getting successfully away after punching a postman, and making off with the diamond-filled parcel. However, that evening, in his hotel room he is paid a visit by two Metropolitan Police detectives who have received an anonymous phone call advising them about the robbery. They are unconvinced by Rearden's pretence to be an innocent Australian who had recently arrived in London.

Steve Mallory sort indemne, mais amnésique, d'un accident où sa voiture est tombée dans un fleuve. Durant trois jours, il va de découvertes en surprises. Le veuf, Aldrich, l'accuse de meurtre ainsi qu'Oliver. Steve est alors appréhendé par la police et incarcéré. Mais Aldrich enlève Alexandria, menaçant de la tuer pour venger la mort de sa femme. Steve réussit à s'évader et parvient à délivrer Alexandria. Tandis qu'Aldrich est arrêté, l'enquête révèle qu'Holly est morte noyée.
