Il retrouve une dernière fois King Vidor pour La Folle Enquête (coréalisé par Leslie Fenton, 1948). Ultérieurement, il contribue notamment à quelques autres westerns, dont Fort Yuma de Lesley Selander (1955) et Les Dix Audacieux de William Beaudine (1960).
Les quatre derniers de ses trente-neuf films américains comme directeur de la photographie sortent en 1965, dont le western Convict Stage du même Lesley Selander. S'ajoutent trois documentaires, le premier en 1936 (Master Hands), les deux suivants respectivement en 1954 et 1955.
Gordon Avil est également actif à la télévision américaine, où il collabore à dix-neuf séries, la première en 1952. Entre autres, il est chef opérateur sur six épisodes de la série-western Au nom de la loi (1960-1961).
Mais surtout, il est directeur de la photographie attitré de Zorro (intégrale en quatre-vingts épisodes, 1957-1959) puis de Papa Schultz (cent-cinq épisodes, 1965-1970).
Il meurt brutalement d'une crise cardiaque à 71 ans, cette année 1970, sur le tournage à la Barbade d'un épisode de Papa Schultz.

Young Peggy Pepper (Marion Davies) wants to be in motion pictures, so her father (Dell Henderson) drives her across the country from their home in Georgia to Hollywood. After some initial disillusionment, she meets Billy Boone (William Haines) in a studio commissary; he tells her to show up at his set if she wants work. Peggy goes, gets sprayed with seltzer water at her first entrance, and is at first shocked and dismayed to find she is doing slapstick comedy in low-budget "Comet" productions, but she decides to "take it on the chin" and, with Billy's loving support, becomes a success.

Set in England in 1872, the story concerned a prominent, knighted surgeon whose wife has fallen into a coma caused by a deep-seated brain tumor. Due to medicine's state of the art at the time, he does not know how to reach the tumor without risking brain damage or death to the woman he loves, so he undertakes to secretly experiment on the brains of living, but involuntary, human subjects who are under the influence of a powerful Indian anesthetic, Nind Andhera, which he calls the "Black Sleep". Once he has finished his experiment, surviving subjects are revived and placed, in seriously degenerated and mutilated states, in a hidden cellar in the gloomy, abandoned country abbey where he conducts his experiments.

Four astronauts in 1960 travel to a planet called Nova that has just entered Earth's solar system. The crew begins studying the planet to see if it's suitable for a possible Earth colony. After first discovering normal Earth animals such as a kinkajou and an alligator, they soon encounter and battle giant insects, an enormous snake, prehistoric mammals, dinosaurs, and - on an island - the titular character, King Dinosaur, a putative Tyrannosaurus Rex. A strong force of mounted tribal Arabs launches a surprise attack on a French Foreign Legion fort in the North African desert, having previously intercepted and brutally massacred a relief column en route to the fort. After an Alamo-like battle, the more numerous Arabs capture the fort.
