Biography

Guy W. Tropser débute dans le cinéma comme lecteur de scénario chez Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Sa carrière de scénariste débute pendant la guerre où il travaille pour des films de propagande de la First Motion Picture Unit avec les scénaristes Irving Wallace, Walter Doniger, Joel Malone, Malvin Wald, Alfred Lewis Levitt. Sa carrière décolle avec le scénario de Un homme change son destin, un film de baseball avec James Stewart, qui obtient un grand succès populaire. Dans les années 1950 et 1960, il écrit pour Elvis Presley le scénario du Rock du bagne, coécrit avec Calder Willingham le scénario de La Vengeance aux deux visages de Marlon Brando, écrit et produit Le Prisonnier d'Alcatraz de John Frankenheimer. Son dernier scénario coécrit avec Paul Dehn est l'adaptation du roman de John Le Carré : L'Espion qui venait du froid réalisé par Martin Ritt en 1965.

The US Army has decided to form an elite strike force similar to the British Commandos. Major William Darby (James Garner), a staff officer, gets command of the 1st Ranger Battalion, to be formed entirely from volunteers.On June 19, 1942 the 1st Ranger Battalion was sanctioned, recruited, and began training in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland. Darby and Master Sergeant Saul Rosen (Jack Warden), who also narrates the film, select a variety of men for training in Scotland by British Commando veterans. Darby tells his men that the Commandos are the best soldiers in the world, but in time they (the Rangers) will be. The Americans are quartered in Scottish homes and several of the Rangers pair off with local lassies: Rollo Burns (Peter Brown) with Peggy McTavish (Venetia Stevenson), the daughter of the fearsome but humorous Scottish Commando instructor, Sergeant McTavish (Torin Thatcher), and vagabond Hank Bishop (Stuart Whitman) with the proper Wendy Hollister (Joan Elan).

Construction worker Vince Everett (Elvis) accidentally kills a drunken and belligerent man in a barroom brawl. He is sentenced to between one and ten years in the state penitentiary for manslaughter. His new cellmate, washed-up country singer Hunk Houghton (Shaughnessy), starts teaching Vince to play the guitar after hearing Vince sing and strum Hunk's guitar. Hunk then convinces Vince to participate in an upcoming inmate show, which is broadcast on nationwide television. Vince receives numerous fan letters as a result; but out of apparent jealousy, Hunk ensures they are not delivered to Vince. Hunk then convinces Vince to sign a "contract" to become equal partners in his act. Meanwhile, during an inmate riot in the mess hall, a guard shoves Vince, who retaliates by striking the guard. As a result, the warden orders Vince to be lashed with a whip. Afterwards, it was discovered that Hunk attempted to bribe the guards to drop the punishment, but to no avail.

A scout for the St. Louis Cardinals comes to a small town in the Ozarks to assess pitcher Jerome Herman Dean (Dailey). Dean, with an over-abundance of self-confidence, is certain that the club wants him to start immediately and is surprised that he is sent to the minor league Houston Buffaloes. Despite his obvious talents, Dean is teased about his rustic clothes and goes to a department store to buy new suits. He meets pretty credit officer Patricia Nash (Dru) and courts her with great vigor. At an exhibition between the Buffaloes and the Chicago White Sox, Dean is dismayed to see Pat with another man but pitches an almost perfect game. The White Sox players razz Dean, calling him "Dizzy," but he adopts the nickname, which is picked up by sports reporters. Dean asks Pat to elope, and although she is stunned by his proposal, agrees to marry him.
