Harry Philmore Langdon (June 15, 1884 – December 22, 1944) was an American comedian who appeared in vaudeville, silent films (where he had his greatest fame), and talkies. He was briefly partnered with Oliver Hardy.

Biography

Fils d'un officier de l'Armée du salut, Harry monte sur les planches du music-hall à 10 ans. Après d'innombrables tournées dans les cirques et les théâtres burlesques, en 1903 il écrit un numéro comique intitulé Johnny et sa nouvelle voiture, lequel le fera vivre tant bien que mal pendant près de 20 ans, jusqu'au jour où il rencontre Mack Sennett. Celui-ci filme son numéro, ce qui lui vaut le succès (à près de 40 ans). Après d’innombrables apparitions dans des courts-métrages muet, il fonde, en 1926, sa maison de production. Cette même année, il rencontre Harry Edwards et Frank Capra, qui le font jouer dans trois films : Plein les bottes, L'Athlète incomplet et Sa dernière culotte. Ces trois succès lui valent d'être, en 1927, l'une des plus grandes vedettes d'Hollywood. Mais le succès est de courte durée : il renvoie un à un tous ses collaborateurs pour écrire, diriger, interpréter ses films à l'instar de Chaplin. Ses mauvais choix lui coûteront cher. C'est ainsi que Langdon, à cause de trois échecs financiers retentissants, perd son public.

En 1929, il n'a plus le choix, le public a retourné sa veste, il devra travailler comme un acteur de complément jusqu'à la fin de sa vie. Comédien déchu, il travaille parfois au scénario de certains films (Têtes de pioche).

De tous les grands comiques américains, Langdon fut sans doute le plus malchanceux et le plus méconnu. Son art burlesque est celui d'un personnage perpétuellement inadapté, névrosé, à la limite du pathétique. Au cours de sa carrière, il apparaîtra dans 95 films de 1924 à 1944.

Harry Langdon décède d'une hémorragie cérébrale le 22 décembre 1944 à Los Angeles, en Californie.

Higgins explains that the owner of the place plans to rent it to some "respectable" tenants. When Muggs learns that the new tenants are due to examine the place at noon the following day, he plans to frighten them away by picking a fight with Butch (Billy Benedict) and the Five Pointers, a rival gang.

The story takes place towards the end of the first World War. Georgie Wilson is gambling with some friends. When one of them accuses him of cheating they get into a fight. When Wilson sees his opponent fall down the stairs he assumes he has died. He escapes with his friend, Tim, before the police arrive by joining a parade of men who are enlisting for the army. They end up joining together as Tim made his mind up that he wants to join the Army. They get into trouble with their captain on numerous occasions, leading him to punish them numerous times by making them stable cleaners. When they are stationed at the German town of Koblenz, Wilson meets and falls in love with Gretchen Rittner, daughter of an innkeeper. He is unable to propose marriage to her, however, with a murder charging hanging over his head. Eventually, the man he thought he murdered turns up and this allows Wilson to finally marry Gretchen.
