Harry Perry — né le 2 mai 1888 au Kansas , mort le 9 février 1985 à Los Angeles (quartier de Woodland Hills, Californie) — est un directeur de la photographie et technicien des effets visuels américain.

Biography

Comme directeur de la photographie, Harry Perry contribue à trente films américains (majoritairement muets, dont quelques westerns), le premier sorti en 1920 étant The Sins of Rosanne de Tom Forman (avec Ethel Clayton et Jack Holt).

Par la suite, au sein de la Paramount Pictures (Famous Players-Lasky Corporation) principalement, il retrouve souvent Tom Forman, leur dernière collaboration étant Le Train de minuit (1925, avec Cullen Landis et Dorothy Devore) ; dans l'intervalle, mentionnons La Cité du silence (1921, avec Thomas Meighan et Lois Wilson) et Le Repentir (1922, avec Lon Chaney, Marguerite De La Motte et Harrison Ford).

Ses trois derniers films comme directeur de la photographie sont Les Ailes de William A. Wellman (1927, avec Clara Bow et Buddy Rogers), Now We're in the Air de Frank R. Strayer (1927, avec Wallace Beery et Raymond Hatton) et Les Anges de l'enfer (1930, avec Ben Lyon, James Hall et Jean Harlow), où il s'illustre dans les prises de vues aériennes.

Le troisième lui faut en novembre 1930 une nomination (partagée avec Tony Gaudio) à l'Oscar de la meilleure photographie, non gagné.

Ultérieurement, à partir de 1933, il participe à dix-neuf autres films américains, comme technicien des effets visuels (ex. : Désir de Frank Borzage, 1936) ou chef opérateur de seconde équipe (ex. : Le Défilé de la mort de John Farrow, 1943).

Son dernier film, aux effets visuels, est Berlin Express de Jacques Tourneur, sorti en 1948, après lequel il se retire.

Danny O'Rourke is the son of a police officer who was killed in the line of duty. Eager to join the police force, Danny fails his exams. The failure causes him to neglect his sweetheart Maggie, whose father is a police lieutenant. His attentions turn instead towards society girl Miriam Welton. When Danny’s sister, Shannon, is arrested for shoplifting, Danny turns to boxing to save her. He works his way towards the championship but discovers the final bought has been rigged. Danny fights anyhow and he is beaten, but it is discovered that a mistake had been made on his exams and he actually was eligible to join the police force after all.

A boastful and proud yet abusive fisherman by the name of Daniel Gibbs (Walter Long) leaves his wife Sympathy (De La Motte) to go on a fishing expedition with other villagers from their village of Urkey and is lost at sea. Two men survive, one villager and a mysterious Chinese stranger named Yen Sin (Chaney). Being Chinese and refusing to take part in Christian service for those lost, he is made an outcast and forced to live on a small boat in the harbor. He makes his living doing laundry from his boat, and is soon greeted by the new minister, John Malden (Ford), who tries unsuccessfully to convert him. Love blossoms between Reverend Malden and Sympathy, and they are soon married, to the chagrin of the wealthiest member of the village, Nate Snow (St. Polis). Sympathy soon befriends Yen Sin after she observes several kids taunting him in the street.
