Renée dite Guinguette, une ancienne prostituée, a gagné suffisamment d'argent sur le trottoir parisien pour pouvoir s'acheter son rêve : une guinguette au bord de l'eau. Brigitte de Lénouville (Danielle Darrieux) est la veuve et l'héritière d'un très grand fabricant de bière. Aidée de Lestrange, son homme d'affaires, amoureux et ridicule, elle a déjà fondé dix œuvres importantes et est sollicitée d'en fonder de nouvelles. Pour elle, la fin justifie les moyens et, toutes ses brasseries étant hypothéquées depuis longtemps, elle fait disparaître des escrocs ou des gangsters pour financer ses œuvres charitables. Lestrange espère le mariage à la mort de la 12e victime, mais, en attendant, les gangsters sont invités successivement comme prétendants à la main de la riche veuve. Au fond du parc, autour d'un obélisque funéraire à la mémoire de son mari, des massifs d'hortensias de plus en plus nombreux recouvrent les corps des victimes.

Pierre Tardivet, a professor, marries Marie-José Vauzange, a sensitive and intelligent girl with bad looks. Tardivet's mean spirit soon appears in their marital life, plunging Marie-José in a monotonous life. Two children are born out this marriage. Tardivet suffers a car accident and he is tended by Dr. Bosc, a famous plastic surgeon. Bosc operates on Marie-José and her transformation is total. Tardivet's meannes exacerbates as he becomes embittered and hateful towards the new looks of his wife whom he does not consider his anymore. He kills Dr. Bosc at the time when Marie-José and her sister's husband, Gérard Durieu, want to elope and restart their lives. Aware of her duties, she renounces her happiness to tend to her husband and children.

Sparks fly with the Count, but when he introduces Elena to General Rollan (Jean Marais) , the General is quite taken with her as well. By the end of the day, Elena finds her hands full with her engagement, and the romantic interests of two new men. To further complicate matters, General Rollan's political advisers see the General's romantic interest in Elena as a way to influence him to overtake the French government, and they employ her to grant him the luck he needs to do so.

Le juge Lamy ne pourra malheureusement arrêter le destin de Francis et Sylvette qui périront, noyés, alors que la police était prête à les appréhender.
