Herbet Dalmas, né le 29 juillet 1902 à Daylesford en Pennsylvanie et décédé le 27 janvier 1989 à Santa Barbara en Californie, est un écrivain et scénariste américain.

Biography

Il fréquente dans sa jeunesse l’Université Rutgers.

Dès le début des années 1930, il publie des nouvelles dans des journaux et magazines, notamment dans The Saturday Evening Post.

Il amorce en 1938 une carrière de scénariste et travaille sur l’adaptation du comic strip Flash Gordon sous forme de serial pour le cinéma. En 1944, il adapte le roman Inconnu à cette adresse de la romancière américaine Kressmann Taylor pour William Cameron Menzies qui réalise le film Address Unknown. Il participe également à l’écriture de plusieurs scénarios de westerns pour différents réalisateurs.

En parallèle à sa carrière de scénariste, il continue d'écrire des nouvelles et des articles pour divers magazines, dont Coronet et Collier's Weekly. Il signe également trois romans, parmi lesquels The Fowler Formula, un thriller matinée de roman policier, est publié en 1968 à la Série noire sous le titre Sus au prof !. Ce roman raconte comment le paisible professeur John Fowler devient la victime innocente d'une habile machination. Traqué par la police, abandonné de ses amis, il devient l'objet de la vindicte du peuple qui réclame sa tête.

Late in the reign of Elizabeth I of England, Spanish noble Don Juan de Mañara (Errol Flynn) is repatriated from London to Madrid after a serious diplomatic scandal caused by his affair with the British fiancée of a Spanish duke. The Spanish ambassador in London, Count de Polan (Robert Warwick), sends a letter of recommendation to his friend Queen Margaret (Viveca Lindfors), asking her to provide an opportunity at the court to rehabilitate Don Juan after the gossiping and rumors about his multiple illicit love affairs. He is thus hired as a fencing instructor at the Spanish Academy.

Two close friends, Martin Schulz and Max Eisenstein (Morris Carnovsky), are German expatriate art dealers living in the United States. Martin's son Heinrich (Peter van Eyck) and Max's daughter Griselle (K.T. Stevens) are in love. However, she turns down his proposal of marriage for the time being, as she aspires to become an actress. When Martin and his wife return to Germany for business purposes, Griselle accompanies them to seek acting opportunities there. Max and Heinrich remain in San Francisco to run the art gallery, while Martin sends them paintings to sell. Martin sends a strange painting from an unknown artist to Max as a joke, the "unknown" artist being Pablo Picasso.
