Karan (Vidyut Jamwal), a commando with 9 Para Commandos of the Indian Army. During a routine helicopter training their helicopter crashes into the Chinese side. The lone survivor of the wreckage, he is captured by Chinese officials. As the crash happened on a river and wreckage of the chopper got washed away, Karan as well as his seniors are not able to convince the Chinese of his innocence. The Chinese feel they can use these circumstances to brand him as an Indian Spy and use this political leverage to embarrass the Indian Government and create an International fracus. The Indian Government feels that under such politically unfavourable circumstances, the Chinese will not accept any proof of Karan having crashed during a routine training so they order the Army to erase Karan's army record, identities and simply deny his existence. Due to this Karan has to suffer inhuman torture from Chinese army for one year in a bid to force a confession out of him.

The film opens in a rundown pigeon shop in New York City where an old man feeds them. He then sends one pigeon away. It flies high and lands in a skyscraper off the office window of a psychologist who is conducting a session with her client Nirupama (Pooja Kumar), a nuclear oncologist, who begins to confide that hers was a marriage of convenience that provided a safe haven for pursuing her PhD in the U.S.A. for past three years and that her husband Vishwanath alias Viz (Kamal Haasan) is a middle-aged Kathak teacher. She is also put off by Viz's effeminate bearing and is attracted to her boss, Deepankar (Samrat Chakrabarti). Doubting whether her husband has secrets of his own, she hires a private investigator to tail him to probe grounds for divorce. She learns from the private investigator that Viz is a Muslim. In a sudden turn of events, the investigator is killed in a sea-side warehouse by Farukh, a prominent member of the terrorist outfit led by Omar (Rahul Bose). A diary on him gives away Nirupama and the terror group led by Farukh nabs the couple. Deepankar is later killed by Farukh's men.

After heavy firing on the house, they retreat from the crime scene in a vehicle, convinced they have killed everyone within. The leader of the gang then calls one JP Singh (Satya Anand) on his cell phone and reports that the family have been successfully executed but he is double crossed by JP Singh as a fire fight erupts between them and a police check post blocking their escape route. The scene cuts abruptly for a prologue by the narrator, Nasir.

Three friends from Delhi go missing in a small village – Jhanjhar. It's two months and there is no clue about their disappearance. The media and students movement demand action from the authorities. The film revolves around a struggling road constructor, Sachin Tichkule (Akshay Kumar). He dreams big, but there seems to be no chance of his dreams coming true as he doesn't have any money to bribe the bureaucracy. His family have lost faith in him, telling him to earn money. To make matters worse, the new Municipal Commissioner turns out to be his former girlfriend, Gehna Ganpule (Trisha Krishnan), who now hates him. His brothers-in-law Trigun (Manoj Joshi), Suhas Vichare (Milind Gunaji), and his elder brother (Paritosh Sand) were all responsible for a bridge collapsing case in which many people were killed. They were helped by a politician named Sanjay Rana (Jaideep Ahlawat). After being saved by their driver Vishwas Rao, (Tinu Anand) they kill him fearing he would reveal the truth. Meanwhile Sanjay's lustful eyes fall on Sachin's sister Anjali (Urvashi Sharma). Sachin warns him by slapping him in his office. Meanwhile Azad Bhagat (Makrand Deshpande) wants justice as his family were killed in that accident. Anjali is married to Sanjay, unbeknownst to Sachin, when he confronts his father he reprimands him, saying he has no right to say he didn't know anything because he has no money to send his sister off. After losing contact, he learns she has been attempting to contact him and goes to their house, seeing Azad escape from Sanjay's house. He then learns of Anjali's death because a cooker exploded. Devastating the whole family, especially Sachin himself, who is suspicious. He then meets Azad again at the municipal office, he learns of Azad's intentions and that he had stolen evidence which would put the people involved, behind bars. They both then agree to help each other to reveal the corruptness behind the construction of the bridge. Sanjay hires masked robbers, who kill Azad, who was on his way to court. At the hospital, while Azad is dying in Sachin's arms, he reveals that while he was stealing the evidence, he saw Sachin's sister being raped by Sanjay and his friends, now speculating whether she was murdered or if she committed suicide. In an attempt to make sure the evidence isn't revealed, Sanjay steals it after robbing Azad's house, a fight ensues between Sanjay and Sachin, Sanjay is then killed after being run over and Sachin successfully retrieves the evidence. Sachin's brother and brothers-in-law are arrested, and the whole family begin belittling him, claiming he was jealous of them and unlike his successful brothers, and blaming him for tarnishing the family name. Sachin then argues back that, they didn't lose anyone and he had to deal with the pain of losing Anjali the most. He agrees to leave, until his father stops him and realises his honesty and trustworthiness, re-kindling their relationship.
