Jaime Chávarri (born 20 March 1943) is a Spanish film director and screenwriter.

Biography

Après une expérience de scénariste pour Jess Franco (Vampyros Lesbos) puis de directeur artistique pour Víctor Erice (L'Esprit de la ruche) ou encore Carlos Saura (Anna et les Loups), il se lance dans la réalisation. Il est ainsi l'auteur en 1975 du documentaire Le Désenchantement (El desencanto), évocation au vitriol du poète franquiste Leopoldo Panero par sa veuve et ses enfants (dont Leopoldo María Panero), qui reçoit du Círculo de Escritores Cinematográficos le prix du meilleur film et est aujourd'hui une icône de la Transition démocratique espagnole.

Acteur occasionnel, il apparaît dans deux films de Pedro Almodóvar (Qu'est-ce que j'ai fait pour mériter ça ? et Matador).

The Panero is an illustrious traditional family from Astorga with literary links extending for generations. The patriarch, Leopoldo Panero, was the best regarded poet in Spain during his time. He died suddenly of a heart condition in 1962. Twelve years later, his widow, the still beautiful and elegant Felicidad Blanc, in the company of two of her sons Juan Luis and Michi, is shown in an outdoor homage to the late poet.

On a remote island, beautiful bloodsucker Countess Nadine Carody (Soledad Miranda) lures unwary victims with her seductive nightclub act and sets her sights on Linda (Ewa Strömberg). Linda begins having dreams about Nadine, and seeks her home on an island. She is interrupted by Memmet (Jesus Franco) who warns her not to go to the island. Linda follows Memmet to his chamber where she walks in on him torturing a young woman. She escapes this encounter and proceeds to the island. On the Island, Linda meets Nadine. The two go swimming and Nadine notes that the home they are staying at used to belong to Count Dracula. After Linda begins to feel dizzy from drinking wine, Nadine takes her to a room where the two have sex and Nadine draws blood from Linda's neck. Linda later finds Nadine motionless in a swimming pool and faints.
