Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, née le 26 avril 1711 à Rouen, morte le 8 septembre 1780 à Chavanod, est une pédagogue, journaliste et écrivain française, auteur de nombreux contes comme La Belle et la Bête devenus des classiques de la littérature d’enfance et de jeunesse.

Biography

Fille de Jean-Baptiste Le Prince, et de Marie-Barbe Plantart, sœur du peintre Jean-Baptiste Le Prince, elle perd sa mère très jeune : son père se remarie avec Marie Anne Thérèse du Guillaud, puis Anne Gaultier, et elle passe dix ans (1725-1735) à la maison d'éducation des dames d'Ernemont et devient institutrice des petits en 1736.

In France, 1810, a widowed merchant (André Dussollier) is forced to sell his town house and many of his belongings after his ships are lost at sea, leaving him bankrupt. He moves to a simple house in the countryside with his six children, though the only one happy with the change is his youngest daughter, Belle (Léa Seydoux). One day news arrives that one of the merchant's ships is intact, so he and his eldest son return to town in the hopes of collecting the goods that will restore their wealth. However, the goods are seized by the local authorities, and the merchant is forced to flee into the forest when Perducas (Eduardo Noriega) threatens to harm him over his son's debts.

An enchantress, disguised as an old beggar, offers a rose to a young prince, in exchange for shelter in his castle from the cold, but the prince refuses. For his arrogance, the enchantress transforms him into a beast and places a spell on the castle. She gives him a magic mirror that enables him to view faraway events, along with the enchanted rose that she had offered. To break the spell, the prince must learn to love another and earn her love in return before the rose's last petal falls on his 21st birthday. If he fails, he will remain a beast forever.
