Jeni LeGon (August 14, 1916 – December 7, 2012) was an American dancer, dance instructor, and actress. She was one of the first African-American women to establish a solo career in tap.

She was born Jennie Bell in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents were Hector Ligon, a chef who also worked as a railway porter, and Harriet Bell Ligon, a housewife. She graduated from Sexton Elementary School in 1928, and at the age of thirteen got her first job in musical theater. She eventually auditioned for the chorus line of band leader Count Basie and was selected.

LeGon and her half-sister, Willa Mae Lane, formed a song-and-dance team. They were given the opportunity to go to Detroit and work with nightclub owner Leonard Reed. While there, they received an offer to travel to Hollywood and perform with composer Shelton Brooks. Upon arrival, they discovered there was, in fact, no job. LeGon heard about auditions being held by Ethel Waters' former manager, Earl Dancer. The audition was for a film that Fox Studios was producing. She won the part and subsequently appeared in dance numbers in several musicals.

While in Hollywood, LeGon had the opportunity to work with performers such as Ethel Waters and Al Jolson. She danced with Fred Astaire and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, becoming the first African-American woman to do so on screen. During this time, she was given a role in Hooray for Love, which led MGM to offer her a long-term contract, making LeGon the first African-American woman to receive such an opportunity. In 1969, LeGon settled in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she taught tap and point. In 1999, the National Film Board of Canada released a documentary film about her life, Jeni Le Gon: Living in a Great Big Way, directed by Grant Greshuk and produced by Selwyn Jacob.

Biography

Jane Richards (Dorothy Dandridge) is a new teacher, beginning her career at a rural African-American elementary school in Alabama. One of the students in her fourth-grade class is C.T. Young (Philip Hepburn), who, although bright and generally not a troublemaker, is nonetheless markedly uninterested in school and has become accustomed to taking two years to advance through each grade level. Miss Richards becomes determined to get through to C.T. and have her class be the first that does not take him two years to complete, though the school's other teachers have given up on him as "a backward child". The school's principal (Harry Belafonte) also harbors his doubts about C.T., but he admires Miss Richards' enthusiasm and endorses her efforts.

Hewes takes the gifts to his dancing partner, Nadine Hale (Ann Miller), who explains that she has an offer for a show that would feature her as a solo star. Don tries to change her mind and it looks as if he has succeeded ("It Only Happens When I Dance With You"), until Don's best friend, Johnny (Peter Lawford), turns up. Mobster Mama McGann is about to be caught red handed while robbing a bank, but she manages to escape with the help of the naive songwriter Bob Gunther, who is clueless about the robbery. Since Mama has already stolen Bob's wallet during their very brief encounter, she is struck by guilt and decides to return the wallet as thanks for his help. Her son, Sonny McGann, is ordered to return the wallet and hand over a small reward to Bob. Sonny is not what you would call a typical gangster, having far too much artistic blood flowing in his veins. Instead of dreaming of inheriting Mama's business, he yearns to become a poet. He decides to create a song to his childhood sweetheart Sadie, a woman he hasn't met for ages, and in need of a songwriter, he kidnaps Bob to help him out. When Bob has finished writing the tune to Sonny's lyrics, and the song is recorded, Sonny forces the local radio stations and music stores to play it, threatening them with his henchmen. Bob tries to get away from Sonny by speaking his language, and pretends to be lovesick. He names a singer, Magda Delys, as the subject of his strong emotions instead of his real girlfriend Linda Carroll. Sonny decides to help out by forcing Magda to marry Bob, and arranges for a ceremony to take place. Before the wedding, Bob is kidnapped again, this time by Sonny's rival Big Foot Louie. Sonny tries to rescue Bob on his own, but when he gets to Louie's, Bob is already writing a love song for the gangster. Sonny and Louie start discussing a truce, and a possible musical business venture together, while Bob is forced by Sonny's goons to marry Magda. When Sonny comes back and interrupts the "ceremony" he finds that Magda in fact is his old school sweetheart Sadie. A double wedding is arranged, where Sonny marries Sadie, and Bob marries Linda.
