Jeremy Theobald is a British actor best known for his portrayal of "The Young Man", the main character in Christopher Nolan's 1998 major picture debut Following, and for which Theobald was also a producer, Filming was scheduled around their day jobs. Jonathan Romney, writing in the New Statesman, noted that "Nolan and his cast are terrific finds: I wouldn't normally say this to struggling artists, but they might want to give up their day jobs."

Theobald also appeared in Larceny, a short film shot by Nolan while in the UCLU Film Society, and Doodlebug, another short film by Nolan. Theobald also had a small role as the "Younger Gotham Water Board Technician" in the Nolan feature Batman Begins. As with many British actors, he has also had a part in an episode of ITV's The Bill.

He has an interest in publication ethics, and he is currently the Treasurer of the Committee on Publication Ethics, a London-based organisation of biomedical journals.

A struggling, unemployed young writer (credited as "The Young Man") takes to following strangers around the streets of London, ostensibly to find inspiration for his first novel. Initially, he sets strict rules for himself regarding whom he should follow and for how long, but he soon discards them as he focuses on a well-groomed, handsome man in a dark suit. The man in the suit, having noticed he is being followed, quickly confronts the Young Man and introduces himself as "Cobb". Cobb reveals that he is a serial burglar and invites the Young Man (who tells Cobb his name is "Bill") to accompany him on various burglaries. The material gains from these crimes seem to be of secondary importance to Cobb. He takes pleasure in rifling through the personal items in his targets' flats and drinking their wine. He explains that his true passion is using the shock of robbery and violation of property to make his victims re-examine their lives. He sums up his attitude thus: "You take it away, and show them what they had.

The story consists of a grungy man, in a filthy apartment. He is anxious and paranoid, trying to kill a small bug-like creature that is scurrying on his floor. It is revealed that the bug resembles a miniature version of himself. He squashes the bug with his shoe. However, every movement the "doodlebug" makes is later matched by the man himself, and he is later squashed by a larger version of himself.
