John Hay Cossar (2 January 1858 – 28 April 1935) was an English actor of the silent era. He appeared in 146 films between 1914 and 1929.

He was born in London, England and died in Hollywood, California, USA. He was the fifth child of Walter Cossar and his wife Kate Lyster. Walter was in the Royal Marines between 1835 and 1863. In 1865 the family travelled to Canada and thence to Chicago, Illinois in the USA where John's older brother Walter Lyster Cossar later became City Editor of the Chicago Evening Journal.

In 1896, John married Fanny Cohen in Chicago. Fanny was also an actress and the 1930 census of Los Angeles shows them living with two children, Phyllis and Raymond.

Quelques instants avant son mariage, Charlie reçoit de son témoin un message anonyme l'avertissant que sa future épouse a une jambe de bois. Or celle-ci, qui a fait un faux pas en s'habillant, arrive dans l'église en boîtant. Il glisse donc sa main vers les jambes de sa fiancée en pleine cérémonie et touche une canne en bois que son témoin a glissée à cet endroit. Charley annule alors le mariage. Son témoin s'arrange pour récupérer la bague de la jeune femme, qui a une très grande valeur, et la cache dans un chapeau que Charley emporte avec lui. Le témoin le suit alors partout, jusque sur un bateau en partance pour les mers du Sud. Charley finit par trouver la bague dans le revers du chapeau et comprend la trahison de son ami. Il plonge alors dans la mer et va retrouver sa fiancée qui l'avait suivi sur un yacht avec son père.

The story is set in 1482 Paris, France. Quasimodo is a deaf, half-blind, hunchbacked bell-ringer of the famous Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. His master Jehan, the evil brother of the saintly archdeacon Don Claudio, prevails upon the hunchback to kidnap the fair Esmeralda, a dancing gypsy girl (and the adopted daughter of Clopin, the king of the oppressed beggars of Paris' underworld). The dashing Captain Phoebus rescues Esmeralda from Quasimodo, while Jehan abandons him and flees. At first seeking a casual romance, Phoebus becomes entranced by Esmeralda, and takes her under his wing. Quasimodo is sentenced to be lashed in the public square. After being whipped, he begs for water. Esmeralda pities him, and brings him some.
