Sam Bass débarque dans une petite ville pour y trouver un emploi. Mal reçu par le sheriff du lieu qui n'aime pas les joueurs, il fait la connaissance de Calamity Jane et finit sur la pression de l'entourage à trouver un emploi chez ce même sheriff. Là, il tombe amoureux de la soeur de ce dernier et promet de l'épouser. Avant cela il souhaite faire fortune en acquérant un cheval de course qu'il inscrit à une compétition dans la ville d'Albuquerque. Il y mise non seulement son argent personnel mais aussi celui des ranchers pour lesquels il travaille après s'être querellé avec le sheriff. Malheureusement la course est truquée et Sam Bass doit maintenant récupérer les 16000 dollars correspondants. Il attaque le convoi qui transporte l'argent et est désormais poursuivi pour attaque à main armée, puis pour meurtre.

Ex-Major Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart) arrives at the Hotel Largo in Key Largo, Florida, to visit the family of George Temple, a friend from the Army who had served under him and was killed in the Italian campaign. He meets with George's widow Nora Temple (Lauren Bacall) and his father James (Lionel Barrymore), who owns the hotel. Because the winter vacation season has ended and a major hurricane is approaching, the hotel has only six guests: the dapper Toots (Harry Lewis), the boorish Curly (Thomas Gomez), stone-faced Ralph (William Haade), servant Angel (Dan Seymour), an attractive woman, Gaye Dawn (Claire Trevor) who suffers from alcoholism, and a sixth man who remains secluded in his room. They claim to have come to the Florida Keys for a fishing trip and have a charter boat waiting.

At an American air base in England in 1943, conniving, womanizing Sergeant Dolan (Tom D'Andrea) manipulates everyone, while insubordinate ace fighter pilot Major Ed Hardin (Edmund O'Brien) gives his commanding officer and close friend, Colonel Brickley (John Rodney), headaches by ignoring the out-of-date rules of engagement formulated by Brigadier General M. Gilbert (Shepperd Strudwick). When Major General Mike McCready (Henry Hull) promotes Brickley to whip a new squadron into shape, Brickley recommends Hardin as his replacement. Set in New Mexico around the turn of the 20th Century and told in flashback, the film tells the story of Jeb (Mitchum), whose entire family was slaughtered when he was a child. In the aftermath of the massacre, Jeb is found by Mrs. Callum, a widow, who will raise him in her family. Traumatized by the killings, Jeb doesn't recall anything of that night, except for vague images that he sees in a frequent nightmare. Mrs. Callum raises him as her own son, together with her daughter Thorley and her son Adam. Years later, Jeb is shot at while riding a colt, but the shooter misses him; although Mrs. Callum blames the incident on deer hunters, she knows that it was an attempted murder by her brother-in-law Grant, who, for vague reasons, is determined to kill Jeb.
