Angleterre, 1673. John Reid écrit ses mémoires : Lors de la révolution anglaise, il a onze ans lorsque les Doone, seigneurs d'Exeter pour lesquels travaille son père métayer, se voient confisquer leurs terres par le nouveau roi Charles II, à la suite de la mort de Cromwell, qu'ils soutenaient lors du conflit. Les Doone ne l'entendent pas de cette oreille, et tuent le père de John Reid. L'enfant jure de se venger, et le fait savoir aux fils Doone et à leur cousine, Lorna (enfants tout comme lui) quand il les rencontre pour la première fois. Devenu adulte, John Reid, outré par les lourdes taxes sur les cultures imposés par les Doone, prend la tête d'une révolte.

This romance is set in Tyrol, western Austria. Previously filmed in 1928, the sentimental Margaret Kennedy novel The Constant Nymph was sumptuously remade by Gaumont-British Picture Corporation in 1933. Victoria Hopper plays the title character, a rich, Belgian gamine named Tessa Sanger. The girl falls hopelessly in love with world-famous composer Lewis Dodd (Brian Aherne), who is so full of himself that he barely acknowledges Tessa's existence. As she looks on in quiet desperation, Dodd marries another woman, his distant cousin Florence (Leonora Corbett). It takes him nearly the entire picture to realize what a fool he's been, and that Tessa was the one girl for him all along—but alas, it's too late. The Constant Nymph was remade by Warner Bros. in 1943, at which time all prints of the 1933 version were supposed to be destroyed, however, several prints did survive.

Un directeur d'usine est assassiné sur les fortifications (près du boulevard Sérurier cité dans le film, et donc de la commune des Lilas). Le gant de Couchoux, dite Lilas, est trouvé près du cadavre. La police a un suspect, mais l'inspecteur André Lucot le croit innocent et va s'infiltrer dans le milieu en se disant placier en acier afin de mener l'enquête. Couchoux dite « Cœur de Lilas », une fille du milieu, tombe amoureuse de l'inspecteur qui finit par la croire innocente.

In Seville, Spain, a cantina is located across the street from San Agustín convent. At the convent, postulant Maria Consuelo Vargas (Dorothy Jordan) receives a visit from her brother, Captain Enrique Vargas (Russell Hopton). They have not seen each other in seven years, as he has been stationed in Africa. During the intervening time, their mother has died, which left Maria alone in the world, until she entered the convent. Enrique is thrilled that she will soon be married to God. Maria is enthralled by the music that comes from across the street – implying that she wants to explore life outside the convent - but Enrique prefers that she remain behind the safety of the convent walls, as he considers the outside world evil.
