Jyoti Subhash is an Indian actress who works in Marathi film, television and theatre industry. She is best known for her works in Marathi films like Valu (2008), Gabhricha Paus (2009) and Bollywood films like Phoonk (2008) and Aiyyaa (2012).

Biography

Jyoti Subhash is mother of actress Amruta Subhash. They have acted together in many films (Aaji, Zoka, Gandha, Masala, Nital, Valu, Badha, Vihir) and a play (Kalokhachya Leki). She says that being together in any crative process makes the bond stronger. She played the role of Amruta's grandmother in Aaji and that of her mother in 2009 film Gandha. She also helped her while playing the role of a 60-year-old woman in her film Kavadase.

Fandry is story of a teenage boy from a village of state Maharashtra, the film focuses on the problem of caste discrimination by incorporating a love angle in it. The plot opens where the lead role Jabya (Somnath Awghade) and his school friend hanging around the village trying to catch a bird (The Black Sparrow). However, the bird call that punctuates the film is that of the Red Wattled Lapwing (titawi), which is supposed to bring bad luck. The black sparrow, with its distinctive forked tail, and the call of the red wattled lapwing occur repeatedly throughout the film. The reasons for the mismatch between the call and the bird shown are unclear. The duo kept trying to catch the bird in entire film for an unknown reason which is later explained in the film. Jabya and his family lives in a differentiated part of the village as they are categorized as untouchable by the people of their village. The family depends on the random stuff of the village but mainly they get their bread and butter by catching the pigs and putting them off the village. Jabya too helps his family by working after school with his friend by selling ice candies in his neighbor villages. While in school, jabya falls in love with a girl named Shalu (Rajeshwari Kharat). Shalu is born in an upper-class family unlike jabya, so he always tries to hide it from her that he's lower caste and the work he and his family does. Being born in a lower caste family, jabya and his family suffers a lot and goes under a lot of pain to survive. The story then revolves around jabya, his family, love, and the discrimination. The film sums up a life of a person born with a lower caste and his sufferings as a result of caste discrimination.

The story is about a Marathi girl Meenakshi (Rani Mukerji) falling in love with a Tamil artist Surya (Prithviraj Sukumaran). She is a librarian at a college. To escape the craziness of her family, Meenakshi lives her life in dreams, and in her dreams the only thing she's doing is dancing and enacting her favourite actresses: Madhuri, Sridevi, Juhi etc. Then there is Maina or "Gaga Bai"(Anita Date), her colleague, an eccentric woman who dresses up in weird ensembles inspired by pop star Lady Gaga.

Phoonk is based upon the concept of black magic.
