A man known only as the Virginian (Gary Cooper) is ranch foreman at Box H Ranch near Medicine Bow, Wyoming. At a saloon in Medicine Bow, he and the cattle rustler Trampas (Walter Huston) vie for the attentions of a barmaid; when Trampas insults him, the Virginian pulls a gun and tells him to smile. Soon afterwards, Molly Wood (Mary Brian), a new schoolteacher from Vermont, arrives in town. The Virginian and a drifter named Steve (Richard Arlen) vie for her attentions, but she ultimately chooses the latter. However, as Steve was his childhood friend, the Virginian gives him a job at the ranch.

Wilbur (Leon Errol) is a middle-class furniture store employee. His wife Jessie (Elisabeth Risdon) reads a book about how women can make their men more successful, and decides to remake her husband to give him a new image. Now dressed-for-success by his wife, Wilbur reports for work in fancy clothes. Thinking he is dressed for a funeral, his boss (Edwin Maxwell), sends Wilbur home for the day. When Wilbur is wandering perplexed in a nearby park, he is mistaken for the Park Commissioner. Seeing it as an opportunity, McIntosh (Paul Harvey), a crooked politician who wishes to land a lucrative deal with the city to sell them new playground equipment, has the mayor (Robert Middlemass) appoint Wilbur as "Playground Commissioner". Later, when Wilbur is about to denounce McIntosh as a crook, McIntosh has his wife (Charlotte Wynters) ply Wilbur with champagne. While Wilbur is tipsy, Jessie overhears a flirtatious and damning conversation between the two. Wilbur wakes up with a hangover, no pants, and learns that while intoxicated he brought disgrace to himself, the town, and his wife. Wilbur eventually exposes the political corruption, and when his wife finally agrees to let him leave politics, everything turns out okay.

Mac Brewster, de l'agence de publicité Brewster, est nommé président du bal Artistes et Modèles et doit choisir une reine pour la soirée. En échange d'un million de dollars de campagne publicitaire, Mac promet à Alan Townsend, de Townsend Silver, que la reine du bal sera la "Townsend Silver Girl". Mac promet alors à sa petite amie, Paula Sewell, un modèle d'origine modeste, qu'elle aura le titre. Alan de son côté a rencontré Cynthia Wentworth, de Park Avenue, et lui décerne le titre de Townsend Girl. Mac, pendant ce temps, demande Paula en mariage et ils se fiancent. Considérant qu'elle a les capacités pour poser pour Alan, Paula se rend à Miami sous le faux nom de Paula Monterey. Paula fait du charme à Alan, et après avoir dansé ils font ensemble un plongeon dans la piscine à minuit, ce qui pousse Alan à surnommer Paula Cendrillon. Homer (Charles Ruggles) and Marcia Bigelow (Mary Boland) are a happily married couple. Visiting novelist J. Hugh Ramsey (Adolphe Menjou) considers himself both too wise to ever marry and, through hubris, qualified to offer his own wild theories on what constitutes a happy marriage. He had thus written a best selling novel titled Marriage, the Living Death. Ramsey decides that the Bigelow marriage could not possibly be as perfect as it appears, and convinces Homer that his wife must be secretly unhappy because she had never had the opportunity to forgive the morally spotless Homer for any misdeed. Wishing to please, Homer decides to involve himself in a trist so that Marcia would then have something for which she could forgive him. He chooses French actress Renée La Journée (Vivienne Osborne) who is performing nearby. Ramsey learns of the affair and discovers that the La Journée turns out to be the one love of his life that he had lost years earlier.

Afraid of marriage, Simone (Mary Ellis) breaks off her long term engagement with her fiancé Paul de Lille (Tullio Carminati). Paul heads to the top of The Eiffel Tower with thoughts of suicide. In another part of Paris and also afraid of marriage, Mignon (Ida Lupino) breaks it off from her young lover (James Blakely). Despairing, Mignon also climbs to the top of the The Eiffel Tower intending to leap to her death. There she meets Paul and the two compare stories. After discussion, Paul dissuades her from leaping and the two conspire to make their respective partners jealous by pretending to have an affair with each other.

Le film met en scène trois couples qui vont se croiser contre leur gré et dont les rencontres vont provoquer une série de catastrophes et de quiproquos. Le premier couple est formé des époux Whinney, la quarantaine, lui employé de banque, qui désire prendre 15 jours de vacances. Madame Whinney afin d'économiser sur le prix du voyage propose de prendre un autre couple en co-voiturage mais sans le dire à son mari. Le couple en question, Georges et Gracie est atypique, non marié, jeune, la fille simplette et extravagante, l'homme ronchon, et pour couronner le tout, ils sont accompagnés d'un énorme chien qui n'aime pas trop qu'on le contrarie. Fergusson, un collègue de Whinney trouve un stratagème afin que ce dernier emporte dans sa valise de l'argent qu'il a dérobé dans le coffre de la banque. Mais les excentricités de Gracie font que nos deux couples de vacanciers ont fait un détour improbable et ne se trouve pas à l’hôtel où ils devaient descendre et où le collègue devait récupérer les fonds. Finalement les deux couples après s'être fait détrousser de leur argent (mais pas de celui de la valise) et leurs bijoux par des bandits de grand chemins arrivent pour la nuit dans une petite ville de l’Ouest où nous découvrons le troisième couple, il s’agit du Shérif John Hoxley (W. C. Fields) et de son épouse qui gère l’hôtel. Sur place, Whinney télégraphie à la banque afin qu'on lui débloque des fonds pour payer leur nuit d'hôtel. La police qui le soupçonnait peut ainsi le localiser, mais également Fergusson. Après une série de quiproquos à répétition, Fergusson sera arrêté, Whinney blanchi, quant à Georges et Gracie ils retrouveront un autre couple de pigeons pour continuer leur route.

The departure of an ocean liner is held up to wait for spoiled heiress Anne Holt (Carole Lombard). Tony Gage (Lyle Talbot) expresses his contempt of her inconsiderate behavior to a fellow passenger, who agrees with him, even though she is the woman's paternal grandmother, Gran Holt (Louise Closser Hale).
