Biography

Au théâtre, Loring Smith joue notamment à Broadway (New York) à partir de 1940, dans douze pièces, dont John Loves Mary de Norman Krasna (1947-1948, avec Nina Foch et Tom Ewell) et The Matchmaker de Thornton Wilder (1955-1957, avec Ruth Gordon et Arthur Hill).

Sa dernière pièce sur les planches new-yorkaises est une adaptation de La Queue du Diable d'Yves Jamiaque, représentée en 1964, avec Tom Bosley et Severn Darden.

Toujours à Broadway, il participe à trois comédies musicales, la première en 1949-1950, la troisième en 1961-1962. La deuxième en 1952 est Of Thee I Sing de George et Ira Gershwin (avec Jack Carson et Paul Hartman).

Au cinéma, il contribue à seulement dix films américains, les deux premiers sortis en 1941, dont Rendez-vous avec la mort de W. S. Van Dyke (avec William Powell et Myrna Loy).

Citons par la suite Mademoiselle Gagne-Tout de George Cukor (1952, avec Katharine Hepburn et Spencer Tracy) et Le Cardinal d'Otto Preminger (1963, avec Tom Tryon et Romy Schneider).

In 1946, bigoted, draft-dodging Henry Warren and his wife Julie Ann, owners of a Northern canning plant, are determined to purchase a large tract of uncultivated farmland in rural Georgia. Phil Spar (Alan Baxter), a newsreel photographer in New York City, is doing a fashion shot outside a bank. Meanwhile in the bank Joseph Gibbons (Phillip Huston) 's pal, Mr. Fredericks(Michael Wyler) says he is closing out his account tomorrow and will be withdrawing $800,000.00. Phil unintentionally films Martin Beaumont (Richard Kollmar) as he is leaving the bank. An effort is made by Fredericks associate, Beck (Russell Collins) to secure this film. Beck approaches Phil to buy the film, spinning a tale about his wife and his girlfriend not needing to see him in the film. Phil meets magazine reporter Peggy Lane (virginia Gilmore) and they go to deliver the film to Beck. Then Phil's boss, Harry Avery (Loring Smith) discovers that Mr. Beaumont is actually Kurt Bauer, a wanted Nazi war criminal. Phil arranges a rendezvous with Miss Lane at his apartment, but Phil is kidnapped by Gibbons posing as a New York City detective. Phil makes a daring escape on the Staten Island ferry. When Phil returns to his office he finds that his boss killed the hitman who was sent to knock him off and steal the film negative. Phil gives the film can to a cabbie to take to the police, but the bad guys knock out the cabbie and kidnap Phil and Peggy. We learn that Peggy is actually tied in with the bad guys. She has a change of heart and acts to try and keep Phil from getting killed. Mr. Beaumont has hired Gibbons to fly him out of the country. Gibbons tries to double-cross Beauomnt and get all the $800,000, but Beaumont outsmarts him. Beaumont heads to meet the seaplane that will fly him out of the country, using Phil as a shield. Peggy calls the cops. Gibbons shows up and engages in a gunfight with Beaumont. Beaumont kills Gibbons and his henchman, but Phil chases him and Beaumont is shot by the cops. Phil thanks Peggy for saving his life before she goes off to jail.

Jinx Roberts (Dick Foran) is a stunt pilot and his assistants are Blackie (Bud Abbott) and Heathcliff (Lou Costello). All three are fired from the carnival and air show that they work for after a disagreement. Jinx decides that he should join the Army Air Corps, so they go to a nightclub to party one last time. While there Jinx falls for the club's singer, Linda Joyce (Carol Bruce). Coincidentally, she becomes a USO hostess at the same Academy that Jinx and her brother Jimmy (Charles Lang) are enrolled at. It turns out that Jinx's instructor, Craig Morrison (William Gargan), was his co-pilot on a commercial airplane years earlier, and the two still hold animosity for each other. Meanwhile, Blackie and Heathcliff join the Air Corps as ground crewman and fall in love with twin USO hostesses (Martha Raye in a dual role).
