Prague, 1920. Le père de Milena veut qu'elle suive ses traces et qu'elle soit l'un des premiers médecins féminins de Tchécoslovaquie, mais elle désire plutôt devenir écrivain. Elle se rend à Vienne avec le critique de musique Ernst Pollak, d'origine juive, et commence à correspondre avec Franz Kafka. Elle laisse ensuite Pollak et retourne auprès de son père, à Prague, et y traduit Kafka. Comme journaliste, elle suit la grève des ouvriers de la Ruhr en 1923 et y rencontre l'architecte communiste Jaromir. Ils se marient et ont une fille. Milena écrit alors pour un journal marxiste, jusqu'au départ de son mari pour l'Union soviétique. Elle doit alors faire face à la montée du nazisme dans les années qui vont mener à la Seconde Guerre mondiale, et se retrouve dans un camp de concentration.

McLord is a wanted criminal. He frequently suffers with fits which hinder him to defend himself. His condition seems to deteriorate continuously. Seeking shelter he enters the lawless town Escondido although it is currently under siege by a high-ranked law enforcement officer. There he gets to know the young Laurinda and finds a doctor who discovers the reason for his fits. Unlike he feared he's not epileptic and can be cured for good. Yet he's still an outlaw and that is in the end his downfall.

New to the position and unobservant, Kraft accidentally places a pair of black pins where they don't belong, only to discover later that the young couple who had bought the grave sites in question died in an automobile accident soon afterwards. He believes that he marked them for death.

Colonel Jonas is a fanatical and unrepentant Confederate who led a regiment called the Hellbenders in the recently ended Civil War. With his sons Ben, greedy Nat, and rapist Jeff, he massacres Union soldiers transporting a consignment of banknotes and conceals the loot in a coffin supposedly belonging to a deceased Confederate officer, Captain Ambrose who was killed in the Battle of Nashville.
