Gerolama « Mimi » (« Mimì ») Aguglia, née le 21 décembre 1884 à Palerme (Sicile, Italie), morte le 31 juillet 1970 à Los Angeles — Quartier de Woodland Hills (Californie, États-Unis), est une actrice d'origine italienne, naturalisée américaine en 1945.

Biography

En 1900 (à 16 ans), Mimi Aguglia débute au théâtre en Sicile. Elle intègre en 1904 la troupe itinérante se produisant en dialecte sicilien (Compagnia drammatica dialettale siciliana) du dramaturge Nino Martoglio et de l'acteur Giovanni Grasso , puis en 1908, la troupe également itinérante (Nuova compagnia italiana) du baron Vincenzo Ferraù (dont elle est un temps la compagne). Ainsi, elle se produit en tournée dans son île natale (notamment à Catane et à Palerme), la péninsule italienne (ex. : à Milan et à Rome) et à l'étranger (à Londres, à Paris, en Amérique — du Nord et du Sud —, entre autres). Par exemple, en 1908, elle débute à New York dans la pièce Malia (Malìa) de son compatriote Luigi Capuana. Et elle joue à Broadway fin 1919-début 1920, dans une pièce américaine.

Au début des années 1920, Mimi Aguglia s'établit définitivement aux États-Unis et obtient la citoyenneté américaine en 1945. C'est pourquoi elle apparaît au cinéma américain, d'abord comme figurante dans un film muet de 1924, puis dans huit films parlants tournés en langue espagnole, sortis de 1931 à 1935. Enfin, elle collabore à vingt-deux autres films américains, de 1937 à 1957 ; parmi eux, mentionnons Le Banni d'Howard Hughes (1943, western avec Jack Buetel et Jane Russell), Tourment de John Sturges (1950, avec June Allyson et Dick Powell), ou encore La Rose tatouée de Daniel Mann (1955, avec Anna Magnani et Burt Lancaster).

À la télévision, elle contribue à trois séries américaines, en 1950, 1956 et 1964.

Elle est la mère de l'actrice américaine Argentina Brunetti (1907-2005).

Eddie Rico (Richard Conte) is the owner of a prosperous laundry company in Bayshore, Florida who was the former accountant for a major crime syndicate years ago. He has given up his ties to the syndicate, and hopes to adopt a child with his wife, Alice. When Eddie receives a call asking to give a job to Wesson (William Phipps), a junior mobster, and Alice becomes worried that the syndicate will attempt to bring Eddie back into a life of crime. Eddie calms her down, but then he receives a letter from his mother saying that his two brothers, Johnny (James Darren) and Gino (Paul Picerni), have disappeared. On the way to work, Gino finds Eddie and asks for his help in leaving the country: Gino admits to being the gunman for a gang killing and Johnny was the driver. Gino now believes the syndicate is after him, and he was ordered to St. Louis later that day. Eddie, who does not believe that the syndicate is after them, tells Gino to go to St. Louis and gives him some money. When Eddie returns to work, he finds out that the syndicate boss, "Uncle" Sid Kubik (Larry Gates), has ordered him to Miami. Eddie leaves despite his wife's objections that he will miss an adoption interview.

Based on the overthrow of Cuban dictator Gerardo Machado y Morales in 1933, the story is about a group of revolutionaries who plot to bring down their corrupt government. China (pronounced Cheena) Valdez (Jennifer Jones) witnesses her brother's murder after he distributes leftist pamphlets and vows that she will kill his assassin. At his funeral, however, she is persuaded to join an underground group whose moves are more carefully orchestrated. China's house is next door to a cemetery and the leader of the group John Fenner (John Garfield) devises a scheme to assassinate an official whose family plot is in the cemetery and detonate a bomb at the man's funeral thereby killing as many officials as possible. To do this, they must dig a tunnel from China's house to the cemetery. Much of the movie focuses on the digging of the tunnel while Garfield and Jones develop a romantic interest in each other. The film climaxes with a violent shoot-out sequence.

Just after World War II, socialite Jessie Bourne (Barbara Stanwyck) is home alone one night in her Gramercy Park apartment on New York’s East Side when she receives a mysterious hang-up phone call. Her wealthy playboy husband Brandon (James Mason) is out enjoying himself at the Del Rio night club where young model Rosa Senta (Cyd Charisse)–-who has seen and admired Jessie, who has been a customer at the dress salon where she works-–admonishes Brandon for going out alone. Brandon tries to mollify Rosa but is cut short when Brandon’s former mistress, gold-digging Isabel Lorrison (Ava Gardner), walks in. She has returned from Paris intent on rekindling the romance; but he rebuffs her, professing faithfulness to his wife. An argument ensues in which Isabel's date, wealthy Alec Dawning (Douglas Kennedy), who knows Brandon's reputation, knocks him unconscious. Brandon is rescued by Rosa, who takes him to her home to recover.
