A young girl named Eun-joo has gone missing in Busan in 1978. Without any contact from the kidnapper in the past two weeks and no further leads or clues, the police assume that she's dead. Eun-joo's desperate mother turns to renowned fortune-teller Kim Joong-san, who tells her that her daughter is still alive and that she can be saved if they enlist the help of veteran detective Gong Gil-yong. A group of illegal immigrants are smuggled from China to South Korea inside a shipping container, but when it's opened in the affluent Seoul suburb of Bundang by traffickers, it's discovered that all of the immigrants are dead, except for one man, a carrier of a deadly strain of H5N1 (avian influenza, or bird flu). As the man escapes, he quickly spreads the virus to nearby residents. Eighteen-year-old Do Wan-deuk (Yoo Ah-in) lives with his hunchback father Gak-seol (Park Su-yeong) and stuttering uncle Min-gu (Kim Young-jae), former cabaret clowns now having to work in open-air markets after the closure of the nightclub they used for many years. Wan-deuk never knew his mother, who walked out 17 years ago, and has become a young brawler. Kim Seong-yeol is a young Detective in Homicide with the Seoul police. A year earlier, he'd had an affair with his colleague’s wife and, slightly drunk on his way back from meeting her, had caused his daughter's death in a car accident. Wracked with guilt but unable to explain what had happened on that day, he is no longer on speaking terms with his wife, Ji-yeon, who obviously blames him for their only child's death. One day, Ji-yeon goes out all dressed up but comes home unexpectedly disheveled and with blood spatters on her blouse but refusing to explain herself. Seong-yeol is called out to investigate the murder of a man with gang connections and is horrified to find trace evidence that hints at his wife's presence at the scene.
