In the Salton Sea, an underwater earthquake causes a crevice to open, releasing prehistoric giant mollusks. A rescue training parachute jump is conducted, but the patrol boat sent to pick up the jumper finds only a floating parachute. One sailor dives in but disappears. Camden McClure est un juge pour qui la loi est la loi et doit être appliquée quelles que soient les circonstances. En chemin, ils trouvent Mary Jackson, une jeune femme qui s'est perdue et qui est à bout de forces. Mary se remet, mais dans le même temps le juge, qui souffre d'insolation, délire et confesse son crime à Mary. Pour atténuer sa culpabilité, elle lui dit avoir elle-même tué son mari. Ils décident de se marier, mais le juge lit dans un journal que son frère est vivant. Il décide alors de redevenir un juge implacable et dénonce Mary au shérif. Cal, qui est tombé amoureux de Mary, s'enfuit avec elle dans le désert. Elle lui avoue alors qu'elle avait inventé ce crime pour soulager le juge. McClure découvre que son frère est finalement mort et suit les fugitifs dans le désert, mais il est pris dans une tempête de sable et meurt.

In 1906, Alipang (Tetsu Komai) and his Muslim Moro guerrillas are terrorizing the people of the Philippine island of Mindanao, raiding villages, killing the men, and carrying off the women and children for slaves. Instead of maintaining garrisons indefinitely to protect the Filipinos, the U.S. army tests out a new tactic at Fort Mysang. The army detachment is replaced by a handful of officers – Colonel Hatch (Roy Gordon), Captains Manning (Russell Hicks) and Hartley (Reginald Owen), and Lieutenants McCool (David Niven) and Larsen (Broderick Crawford) - who are to train the native Philippine Constabulary to take over the burden. Army doctor Lieutenant Canavan (Gary Cooper) is sent along to keep them healthy. They are welcomed by a skeptical Padre Rafael (Charles Waldron).
