A fairy tale not only for children about Jacob, who through his courage, manages to trick death. The film plays with man’s never-ending desire for happiness, love and victory over death. Mrs. Winter, The Feather Fairy, rules the world and also, being so open hearted, raises little Jacob, who almost died in an avalanche. Life in the fairytale is perfect, the little boy is immortal, he doesn’t get older, and he has everything. Even though his life is perfect he watches human life through a looking glass. He sees a young girl Alžbetka growing into a young lady, and he desires to be a normal person and live with his love. J. My friend Federico Fellini persuaded Guilietta Massina to be the Feather Fairy and she brought a spark and lightness to the story.

The film is based on the story of Erzsébet Bathory, a Hungarian countess in the 16th and 17th centuries. Her story takes place in a part of the Kingdom of Hungary that is now Slovakia. In this retelling, the Countess is a healer who conducts medical experiments and rudimentary autopsies in a "hospital" beneath her castle. She forms a relationship with a reputed witch, Darvulia, who saves her from poisoning. The witch promises Erzsebet a son and eternal beauty. In return, Erzsebet must sacrifice both love and her reputation. Darvulia becomes Erzsebet's companion. Meanwhile, maidens in the area have been dying of seemingly unrelated causes, and Erzsebet is seen bathing in a large tub of red liquid as the girls' now-mutilated corpses are buried nearby. Two monks later conclude that the water is not blood but is simply colored red by herbs.

Lea witnesses her mother's rape and murder by her father as a child and because of it speaks very little and writes poems to her mother. Lea then grows up with foster parents in a different part of Slovakia. Strehlow buys Lea, now aged 21, from her foster father and imprisons her in a castle in Germany, using the same tools Lea's father used to control Lea as a child and to kill Lea's mother. As Strehlow learns more of Lea's past, he permits her to continue writing to her mother. Lea dies of a stroke within a year of living with Strehlow.

À la mort de son père, Jean est seul et se retrouve dans une pauvreté absolue. Il doit quitter la maison de son père. Il va faire la rencontre d'un vieux compagnon de route aux pouvoirs étranges. Jean est attiré par l'annonce faite aux "riches comme aux pauvres" d'essayer de répondre aux devinettes de la princesse Agnès. Il se rend avec le compagnon de voyage au château de la princesse que l'on dit ensorcelée. Les prétendants à la récompense (le trône, la main de la princesse et un vœu) s'exposent en cas d'erreur à être changés en statues de pierre. Pour être récompensé, il suffit de savoir à quoi pense la princesse... Jean triomphera des épreuves grâce à sa générosité, son courage. Il sera guidé par l'amour et protégé par son compagnon.
