Joey Wellman, an American cartoonist from Cleveland now largely forgotten at home, visits France with his partner Lena to attend an exhibition in Paris about the comic strip (bande dessinée) which features his work. He also hopes to be reconciled with his daughter Elsie who has been a student in Paris for two years, in flight from the American culture of which she sees her father as a typical example. Elsie is naively infatuated with French literature, and is trying to secure an introduction to the brilliant university professor Christian Gauthier, an expert on Flaubert but also an enthusiast for comic books. The meeting of father and daughter goes badly, but Elsie is persuaded to join Joey and Lena for the weekend at the country house of Gauthier's mother, Isabelle. During a comic-themed masquerade party, all of the characters are made to reconsider their present and past relationships.

Charles Duchemin (Louis de Funès) is the editor of an internationally known restaurant guide. The film is about Artur Ludvik, alias Gerard, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs of Czechoslovakia. He realizes he is being watched and followed. One day, he is arrested and put into jail by an organisation that declares itself "above the ruling party" and put in solitary confinement for months without being told the reason why. Through brainwashing techniques, including sleep deprivation and being forced to walk back and forth all the time, he is slowly pressured into confessing imaginary crimes, including treason, and to repeat this confession in a public court. Years later, he meets his now demoted tormentor, who tries to downplay his role at that time.

In the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, the communist veteran Diego (Yves Montand) has dedicated his life to continuing the struggle against the Franco regime while living in exile in Paris. Lately, however, he has become war-weary and skeptical about the tactics of the revolutionary underground. After meeting Nadine (Geneviève Bujold), whose father's passport he is using, he learns that she is involved with an alternative revolutionary group that is planning an armed attack in Spain. When he meets the young revolutionaries who will execute the plan, he tries to persuade them to abandon the action as misconceived, but they ignore him. The leaders of the underground, meanwhile, send Diego on a mission to Barcelona along with a new recruit, perhaps as a way of getting rid of him; the police have since discovered his identity.
