Shyam lives a wealthy lifestyle in London, England, and is considered one of the ten richest people in the world. His father, S.K. In bad fortune, while saving his employer Kasturi Prasad's (Dalip Tahil) life, Suryanath (Bharat Bhushan) loses his legs. In appreciation, Kasturi allows Chandra Mohan (Harish Kumar), Suryanath's son, to work in his home. Kasturi's daughter Neelima (Karisma Kapoor) initially makes fun of teases Chandra but soon falls in love with him. Kasturi is against this affair and sends henchmen to attack Chandra, which results in their murdering Suryanath during the meelee. Young Chandra is convicted of the crime and is sent to a youth detention center as a punishment. The head jailer tortures Chandra but center Superintendent Prabhavati (Rama Vij) understands his emotions and love for Neelima and intercedes. She tries to reunite the two lovers.

The movie opens with a young boy tied up inside a cage in a large cave. Some priests and goons are surrounding him. He pleads with them to leave him and asks what they want from him. The priest says that his blood and flesh will give life to Nakita. Just then the witch comes as a lovely young woman and enters the cage. She removes the bat locket from her neck and transforms into a ferocious form, kills the guy. Thakur Mahender Pratap Singh (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) finds out that a witch Nakita (Kamal Roy) is creating havoc in an adjoining forest. One night, his little daughter comes to him and says that villagers have got a dead body outside. He goes and sees the body of an unknown guy, the villagers are surrounding him. When asked they say that a woman roaming in the lonely lanes of the forest has done this. They call her a witch. Sameer Thakur says that witches and devils are just superstitions. But one man says that some years ago when he came to the village from a nearby city, he lost his way and wandered off into the jungle where he saw a young girl. She later turned into a bat and attacked him on the face.

Harnek Singh (alias Nek) (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) is an honest farm worker from the village, who works hard for his employer, Jagirdar Joginder Singh (Amrish Puri). Nek is in love with the village belle, Kammo (Rama Vij), and hopes to marry her after he accumulates enough wealth and some land. One day the Jagirdar asks his assistant, Tulsi (Om Puri), to send Nek out of the village for about 20–25 days. When Nek returns home, Joginder is pleased with him and allocates 6 acres of land so that he can be independent, and marry Kammo. A delighted Nek marries Kammo and they settle down to a harmonious married lifestyle. Soon Kammo becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son, Laali (Raj Babbar). It is then that their world is turned upside down when Nek finds out that the child is not his but that of Joginder, who had raped Kammo in his absence. Angered, Nek kills a man named Kanhaiya, is arrested, tried in Court, and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Nek breaks off all ties with Kammo, suspecting her of infidelity.
