Majid (Raisul Islam Asad), a haggard-looking Mullah, appears in a remote agrarian village suddenly. He cleans up an old dilapidated grave and begins to worship it by declaring it as the shrine of a famous Pir (a holy man). The people of the village have no idea who the holyman was, and though it is a deception, but gradually they starts believing in the myth. People become more interested in the grave speaded with red fabric. He marries Rahima (Munira Yusuf Memi), a hard working woman of peasant family. But whe he become more influential man in the village, he feels the need of a younger wife. He marries Jamila (Chandni), a teenage girl who is not afraid either of the grave or Majid himself. Majid become anxious about her second wife and become strict to control her.

During World War II, a famine broke out. It was called "Panchasher Akal" as it occurred in Bengali 1350s and thousands people died that time. Jaigun was one of them who survived in the Longorkhana that time whose husband abandoned her during the famine. She was accompanied with his son of first husband and daughter of second husband and also her sister-in-law and her nephew. They came back home and build a house in a land that was called "Apoya Vita". When she was struggling hard to live, Godu Prodhan, a influential person of village, proposed her to marry him. At that time, his second husband wants her again. But she refused both. When these two competitors meet one another, her second husband was killed by Godu Prodhan. Jaigun was only eye witness and so Godu burns her house.

Mondol (A.T.M. Shamsuzzaman) is an influential person in the village. His son Milon (Farooque) likes the girl of a street singer (Anwar Hossain) Golapi (Bobita). In the meantime, Mondol brings a bridegroom for Golapi but they demand a cycle. Golapi's father cannot afford this so Milon pay for the cycle. A fisherman, Kishore, marries a young girl accidental when he visits a nearby village. After their wedding night (during which the couple is almost too shy to speak), she is kidnapped on the river. Kishore became mad. She fights with the bandits, jumps into the river and is saved by some strange villagers. But she does not know her new husband's name or what he looks like, she only remembers the name of his village. Ten years pass before she attempts to find him with their son, who sees his mother as a goddess. Some residents of Kishore's village refuse to share food with her and her son because of the ever-present threat of starvation. A young widow whose name is Basanthi giving consideration to the mother and child. Kishore was the lover of Basanthi on childhood. Director Ghatak appears in the film as a boatman, and Basanti's story is the first of several melodramatic tales.
